Sometimes I forget. . .

How different the world I live in is from the one my parents do. I spoke to them on Sunday, as usual (though with extra Mother's Day wishes to follow up the flowers delivered on Friday) and mentioned that raayat was cooking - Mom was genuinely surprised that he would want to cook and Dad lightly chastised me for making him work on the weekend. Huh? ( Read more... )

Heh... maybe you should tell your parents that you have decided their conservative values do have some merit, and so intend to keep raayat permanently in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant. ;-)

In a total non-sequitar - I wanted to call and talk to you after I spoke to aristos1 yesterday, but I lack your number. Can you give me a ring sometime?

Ooooh, what type of food did you eat? Savoury? Sweet?

That's the best way to experience it, babe - just eay your way through.
I saw my mother this weekend, and got stuffed with everything from fried telapia to spiced zuchini/squash. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

both! I'm not sure what any of it was called, but it was all really tasty. Especially the sweet saffron/honey fried things. I could eat a million of those.

Having a spouse that cooks is the only way to go. :) My favorite cooking us/them memory was when Ian took heavy cream and turned it into whipped cream to top a dessert - my mom was shocked that he didn't just use cool-whip.

Real whipped cream is the best!! I don't know if Yo-Yos was around while you were at OU, but they used real whipped cream for all of their drinks and it was absolutely divine.

Well, Tim doesn't cook... that's my thing. And I'm not super at it myself, but I am trying! Last Thanksgiving, for example, I managed to set the pie on fire (ooh flames in the oven yay). We're both a little cooking challenged, I guess. I don't mind cooking because it means I get to choose what goes into a meal, which satisfies my extremely picky tastes.

Cooking takes some getting used to. Ask KT and RebelOwl about some of my disasterous dinners in Austin some time - they were absolute saints while dealing with me experimenting in the kitchen. Once you get going, you develop a "stock" of recipes that you can practically make blind. www.allrecipes.com is good for beginners as well. If you have Joy of Cooking, take it with a grain of salt.

Pies are really hard though, and I always buy mine from the bakery around the corner for parties and Thanksgiving!

Can't confirm that the Parisienne was or was not supposed to be Josephine Baker, but the bit of Frida trivia I *do* know is...

...you know the old lady in the bar singing a sad Mexican ballad? That woman? The actress? That woman was *actually* one of Frida Kahlo's lovers.

I love that movie. Salma and Julie hit me on so many levels, I feel I have to excuse myself to the bathroom.

I didn't know that! Very cool. And yes, Salma is absolutely scrumptious in general and Julie made her even more delectable.
