Help! I've been eating a breakfast sandwich every morning for the past few weeks. I'm not a very good cook even though I'm in a bunch of communities, hoping I'll get inspiration and motivation to try harder, so I thought I'd ask for some advice ( Read more... )

You've got your work cut out for you. My first piece of advice is to learn to make an omelette. Experiment with different cheeses, and you'll probably want to buy some rosemary, sage and oregano, perhaps some pre-mixed spice blends. Play around with those for a bit and I think you'll start getting your own ideas.

Good omelette fillings:
diced tomato
chopped or sliced mushrooms (fresh is best -- those little cans are really only good for saute, in my ecperience)
any color bell pepper

I make breakfast burritos sometimes, scramble some eggs, chop up some grilled fake bacon, maybe chop up some vege sausage if you want, grate a little cheddar, chop some fresh tomato and some chives, maybe some avocado, roll it all up in a warm tortilla. I make it with all of that or just whatever I have on hand and it always tastes fantastic and if you mix and match what you put in, you never really get bored :)

I was going to suggest a breakfast burrito as well. My son (college kid in an apartment) makes them all the time, and often calls to tell me about his latest concoctions.

Having a package of tortillas in the fridge at all times is a good plan. Quesadillas are also great for breakfast, and you don't need anything more than a hot skillet to make one.

That's cute how he calls you. I hope my kids like me that much.

Every conversation with him involves some sort of description of something he's cooked, or a question about how to use something he bought in bulk, on sale. All he wanted for Yule gifts were cooking tools, as he just moved off-campus and into a shared apartment.

He'll be 21 in March, and I love the relationship we have. He's a fine young man (and is turning into a pretty good cook, too!).

My favorite breakfast sandwich is a poached egg on lightly toasted bread with a slice of provolone and some bacon :) alil salt on the egg, simple and yummy.

I like to put thinly sliced sausage in mine - usually chicken sausage, but any kind will do. Carmelized onion is great too, if you like that - i know lots of people don't, though.

But honestly I'd just ask yourself... what DO you like? What's your favorite food? Whatever you like, try adding it in, the worst that can happen is you won't like it. Like tacos? Make it a taco chicken egg sandwich by making up a bunch of thinly sliced chicken seasoned with taco meat and then when you make your breakfast, throw a few slices in, and add some salsa. Like chinese food? Try adding a tiny bit of hoisin sauce to the eggs, and add some water chestnuts. I have no suggestions for making it taste like pizza. :P But y'know... experiment! Eggs are pretty versatile.

If you're sticking to the sandwiches, try it on a bagel, croissant, tortilla (as others have said), some thick, crusty wheat bread.. anything.
