at the urging of coraline, i am posting this amazing recipe for sticky black rice with coconut milk. i brought it to a black foods dinner party on Sunday. having made it Saturday night, and planning to eat the last of it tonight, i can say with confidence that it only gets better!

here's the recipe )

I've had something similar to this in Vietnamese restaurants, but wrapped in a banana leaf as a dessert.

Nummy! :>

yup, this was definitely dessert, though i've been having it for breakfast a lot this week. a good start to any day. :)

hmm, i wonder if there's a variation where it's steamed in a banana leaf... could be fun.

betnoir's recollection of the banana leaf wrapped version actually refers to a Thai verson. And I've had something in a black rice pudding at an Indonesian restaurant, as well.

What other black foods were brought to the party?

And do you think this recipe would work if I replaced the orange with lime? Or does it need to be sweeter? Because I really don't like orange, but the rest of the recipe sounds fabulous.

i think lime would probably work reasonably well, though the orange goes especially well with the vanilla/cardamom/cinnamon spicing. oooh, i wonder if a lime-and-lemongrass spicing scheme would work...

let's see:
squid ink pasta (tossed with garlic, mmm), black beans in not-actually-mole-but-containing-chocolate, black bean and veggie salad, black (dark rye) bread, black olives, blackberries, black grapes, guacamole (well, avocados are black on the outside...), tapenade. coraline made luscious brownies that weren't quite black but good nevertheless. there was also black rum and black current syrup with seltzer in the beverage department. it was a thoroughly delicious dinner.

One question

Where do you find Black Rice?

Asian markets. afaict, the Chinese "forbidden" rice is generally non-sticky, while the Thai varieties (sometimes called purple rice) are usually sticky.
