Hey all,

I'm planning a cookout/barbecue type thing and I'm trying to put the menu together. I'm worried that it's not a coherent culinary statement at all and I'm trying to eliminate some of the ideas I have, so I would love your opinions!

The sole protein I'm serving is hamburgers. For my hamburger mix, I add finely chopped or grated red onion, ( Read more... )

That's a good point about the fruit salad... I was thinking about that, too, that it might make the dessert a bit of an anti-climax. In order for both to work, the fruit salad would have to have some savory element (like a vinaigrette -- maybe raspberry vinegar with basil, pink peppercorns, dijon mustard... I don't know, just brainstorming here).

I would love to keep the Thai salad because we're all such huge fans of the flavors. And I guess that's what's causing me problems, is mixing the Mediterranean flavors with the Thai salad, because I so desperately want to hold onto it :P

Thanks.

With the burgers... Bibb/butter lettuce I think. People love potato salad, so doing one with mustard/herbs/vinaigrette or pesto would be great. Fruit Salad and maybe the bean salad to round it out.

if you really want to do a lot of sides, you could do a little flag or display of each country near that dish, kind of a "tour of the world" side dishes. sounds fun.

i would not use udon for a salad, soba works much better (personal opinion).

Can you tell me more about udon vs. soba? I have very little experience with both.
