It's all about the Reese's peanut butter (omgyum) - although JIF or Skippy will do in a pinch.

JIF all the way! :) I pick natural peanut butter 9 times out of 10, but I recently picked up two huge jars of JIF at Costco.

The store may say toss it, but if you keep the lids and check out the website for ConAgra foods - they have an address where you can mail the lids for a refund. I'll be checking into that today as well.

Typical ingredients in almost all commercial peanut butters:

MADE FROM ROATED PEANUTS, CONTAINS 2 PERCENT OR LESS OF: PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL (SOYBEAN), FULLY HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OILS (RAPESEED AND SOYBEAN), MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES, MOLASSES, SUGAR AND SALT.

.....Why aren't you all buying organic/natural peanut butters? Know what is in them? PEANUTS. Thats IT. It costs the same, if not less, then commercial peanut butter.

we do buy the organic stuff but not before my kids got hooked on the sugared stuff. They don't know we mix it so they get more "just peanuts". Doubt we'll ever get them totally off the name brand but we do what we can. And they aren't allowed to eat it every day. Still PB makes the most portable, packable lunch sure to be eaten. (at least mine don't insist on it being added to high sugar jelly as well).

I grew up on the "commercial" peanut butters, and wanted to shift over to natural brands. It took me *forever* to find one that tasted okay to me. Much to my surprise, it wasn't the sugar I missed; it was the salt. Once I found a salted brand, I was fine. I don't know if the same will work for your kids, but it might be worth a shot.

Actually, it depends on what kind of organic peanut butter you buy. When I bought a jar at Whole Foods recently, I had to search to find one that was just peanuts with no sugar or salt added.

The most interesting thing about this to me is that it looks like Peter Pan and Great Value (Wal-Mart's store brand) peanut butter are the same thing. Same plant + same batch number = same product?

I believe most (if not all ) generic brands are really the same as the name brand but they have some deal to mass produce at a lower cost if it's not marketed under their precious brand. The trick is figuring out which "brand" you are actually getting. Now we know about Great Value peanut butter!
