Sunday Lunches

Jun 03, 2006 13:14

I was having a discussion with a friend the other day about the concept of fast food--and how good food doesn't take much longer to make than it would take for you to hop in your car and go pick something up once you get the hang of cooking. To prove it, I timed my casual Saturday lunch today. From the moment I opened the refrigerator to the last ( Read more... )

beets, vinaigrette, salad, roasting, fennel, potatoes

I'm slightly odd and love my beets cooked and then refrigerated, then I just eat them sliced and cold. Mind you, I also like my oatmeal and corn on the cob cold.

I love cold oatmeal. I make up a batch of the steel cut oat kind with buttermilk, then refreigerate it before eating. It's delish that way. The beets above weren't hot, just room temperature.

Yeah, I cook a pot of steel cut oats and put it in the fridge too!

I like beets hot as well, but I love them cold ;)

Gotta have my corn hot, the butter coagulates when it's cold.

I love cooking, but I hate cleaning up. I just want to nap after I eat.

I don't mind cleaning, though I wouldn't say no to help. I clean most of the dishes as I work, so the after cleaning for this meal was only the serving dishes and the sautee pan for the chops.

You made me want to take a trip to the farm down the road to see if they have beets yet!

Good stuff, beets. I found some when I was back in Dallas. I've not seen them in stores here yet, and the roadside stand people aren't stocked with beets yet. Green tomatoes? Well, I see some fried green tomatoes in my future.

Yeah, not sure what the local farms will have at this point. I know they already have huge heads of lettuce.

Beets have always been something I've wanted to try at home. What's the easiest method of cooking them? Just in the oven on salt?

Well, it's easy, that's for sure. You can also wrap them in aluminum foil with some sort of aromatic, like garlic, and roast them that way. The salt method is reasonably quick, and didn't require any thought, so that's what I went for today.

First, the food looks wonderful, and sounds tasty.

Second... when I do fast food, it's almost always enroute from point A to point B, grabbing the fast food either in "down" time between points (where I couldn't get to my kitchen and cook) or eating while driving, because I don't have time to stop. That's what drive throughs are for. So while I understand what you're saying, and it would apply if I were going out for fast food, in my case I do fast food because I don't have time to take the action of cooking or I'm not able to stop where I am and cook.

Of course, my quality of life would be better if I could afford to slow down the pace some, and there's no argument there, and I'd *love* to have the energy to cook more often, but those of us who endure fast food when we love real food and like (or even love) to cook, are making trade offs for the time, hopefully consciously.

Oh, I wasn't meaning to impugne anyone's choice of dining. That certainly wasn't my intent. And believe me, on the road I have to eat an unfortunately large amount of fast food. Trade-offs exist in every profession, but I was more directing this post at the frequent posters around here wanting to know basics, or how to schedule time. We do get an awful lot of them.
