Patricia Rain (otherwise known as the Vanilla Queen) explains in this post in Small Farms why prices for vanilla have been going up lately and why pure vanilla may be endangered in the future. It also says a little bit about what you can do about it.

Last Christmas a friend got me her luxury vanilla sampler basket and not only was it thoughtful and neat to have, it really was like a mini class in the nuances and types of vanilla. Great package.
