I was surprised by this too, but at the opposite end of the spectrum. I had no idea that in other copies, it ended with Horatio passing out and nothing about his recovery. I wonder why they added the last bit for us Americans.

It's very curious isn't it? I wonder if the publishers felt that the US market would require a more "rounded" conclusion? The UK edition certainly ends very abruptly but it's still a very effective ending.

There is an 'alternate' ending that was added in by CSF for the American audience. It was felt that the original ending was too grim.

And of course, in the add-on CSF makes sure that we know Smallbridge is 30 miles from Sheerness. So ... OF COURSE that means that while Bush was at Sheerness the boyfriend was within striking distance. Oh, CSF. <3

I've now read the missing chapter and it does seem very uncharacteristic of CSF to give Hornblower such a happy ending!

Probably, though I wonder if it's something to do with the comm settings too. Must look into it.

Thanks again for the link! I read the missing chapter at lunchtime. It does seem uncharacteristically cheerful!

Thanks sweetie! brewsternorth and brigittebod had already posted the link to Scaryfangirl's copy of the chapter but for some annoying reason LJ thought they were spam. Grrrr....

I've now read the missing chapter and I must say it seems rather odd for Hornblower to have such a happy ending!
