I'm confused--Kirk was always willing to risk his life for kicks? I only know Original Flavor Kirk (Shatner) and that wasn't how he operated. He was many things but a dashing daredevil he wasn't. Horny, though.

You have to see the first Abrams movie, it's totally part of Kirk's reboot characterization.

Yes to all of the above. I HATE what they did with that scene from TWOK, and I'm still bitter he wasn't Gary Mitchell, because that would have been awesome, glowy eyes and all.

IKR?? We still could have had him play essentially the same character - superior and arrogant and treating everyone else like his playthings - and he would have been a great foil for Kirk to learn the lessons that Pike wanted to teach him about what can happen to a man who believes himself to be above the rules.

You've pretty much summed up my reaction in one tidy paragraph.

I commented to my partner that I might've liked the Star Trek movie more if I hadn't seen Iron Man 3 just a week previously. The Iron Man script was well-written and as elegantly handled as a professional magician's best illusion. ("Here, we'll show you what we're going to do, and you still won't see it coming!")

The Star Trek script, on the other hand, was incredibly clunky. And they couldn't foreshadow anything without jumping up and down and screaming in your face, so by the time the thing they'd been hinting at finally arrived, you were already bored to tears by it. (The torpedoes, the tribble, Scotty's sudden departure . . . ) It all felt like it had been written by and for a bunch of fourteen-year-old boys.

I haven't seen any of the Iron Man movies, but I keep hearing good things.

EXACTLY. I hadn't even been spoiled, and yet nothing surprised me. I'm all for skillful foreshadowing, but for heaven's sake, use some subtlety.

I read one review that suggested that Abrams' approach would be much better suited to the Star Wars franchise, and I have to agree. As a Star Trek fan, I expect more maturity, more philosophy, more attention to ethical dilemmas and character development. This is so obviously "Let's take a bunch of attractive young people and cash in on a dead guy's iconic creations."

Thank you for this. I didn't like the first rebooted movie at all, and now I'm glad I didn't want to see this second one.

Actually, I liked this movie a lot more than I liked the first one on first viewing. Not that this says very much.

I think I'll have to go back and watch the original Star Trek movies, at least II, III, and IV, to clear this one out of my head.

You might slip an Iron Man movie in there; I think you'll like them. (Although I do recommend starting with the first one because otherwise you're missing all the backstory. And it's also a good idea to watch the Avengers movie before I.M.3 -- again, backstory.)

Yes, my RL beta told me that I should watch The Avengers first and then the rest of them... which is why I haven't gotten around to it yet, so much of an investment, lol.

I enjoyed it in an action movie, mindless entertainment, kind of way (as in, this is not Star Trek). I quite liked the remix of the death scene but yeah, didn't have anywhere near the impact of the original because you really have no sense of Kirk and Spock being friends (let alone ~soulmates). Also the idea of Kirk going fresh out of the academy and into the command of a powerful starship was flawed to start with and remains flawed. Spock being in a 'romance' annoys the crap out of me. I wasn't spoiled for Nimoy's appearance so I let out a little squee at that :)

I'm surprised they went for a retread of WOK though - I hope if there's a next movie they start making their own stories.

Yeah, I can understand that. Unfortunately I am not a fan of mindless action movies in general. What I liked so much about Star Trek was that it was *mindful* entertainment.

Yeah, Kirk may have been the youngest Starfleet captain ever, but that doesn't mean he was going to get a starship fresh out of almost flunking the Academy for cheating on the Kobayashi Maru.

I'm also very annoyed by the Spock/Uhura romance. It was fun to see them flirting a little on the old series as colleagues who respected one another and would never actually cross those boundaries. Here it's totally unrealistic that Spock would deny his human half while carrying on in a romantic/sexual relationship with one.

Totally agree - they have great actors and effects but they can't come up with a damn original script? Sheesh.

Yep - up there on the big screen and everything :)

Nu!Spock couldn't work out whether to trust Khan or not so he rang up the real Spock to ask him. Spock goes 'oh, I already told you I can't tell you anything about the future' and then proceeds to spill the beans. It's fairly brief but it was nice to see him again :)
