seriously! it's pretty crazy at the moment, because australia's always been incredibly bad at any sort of equal representation in politics and women have very rarely been given or been seen in any place of power or political sway. as of now though, we have our first female prime minister who is about to be sworn into gov't by our first female governor general, quentin bryce, and qld (my state) and nsw (home of sydney) have our first female premiers as of the last couple of years. it's insane.

Yay for girl power? We've never actually elected a female PM in Canada. Technically, Kim Campbell was PM for 6 months in the 80s but that's only because her predecessor resigned/retired. Our Governor Generals have been women for a long time though. Actually, I can't remember a male one during my lifetime. I think it's how we're attempting to compensate /o\

yay for girl power! we haven't elected one yet either unfortunately, gillard was deputy pm and has been moved to replace kevin rudd (pm) who's recent fails in the field of everything lost him the support of his own party. since gillard's been instated though, the labour party's approval rating has leapt up again. fingers crossed she manages to keep her position for the next election, and tbh i think she will. the oppostition leader is a sexist prick who's wanting to reinstate workplace agreements which is what lost the last prime minister, john howard, the election. workplace agreements remove the minimum wage and basically make it incredibly difficult for small businesses to survive whilst making it really easy for massive american chains like mcdonalds to take over the marketplace. tony abbott's (the current opposition) love of workchoices and honestly his tendency to be a massive douche in public places plus his tendency to objectify women and tell them not to lose their virginity (because it's totally his business) will hopefully ( ... )

It is awesome, I just can't help but wish the first female prime minister was voted in by the Australian public.

i do kind of wish that too, but i'm pretty happy that rudd's gone tbh. i'm just really hopeful that she makes it through the next federal election.

This is so interesting, I have two Aussie flisters and y'all have taken completely different sides! I don't think I know enough about it, but I definitely wish she had been voted in by the people, not the Party. Something smells a little funky about how she got vaulted into power...

as in the other aussie on your flist supports k. rudd or abbott? because abbott's a sexist prick who thinks he has a say in every australian girl's sex life, so i really hope it's not him, lol ( ... )
