The specific stuff [TW: illness, body horror, dark]

While standing at the counter to get food, I discovered that this hip pain feels better standing. As long as I take baby steps and don't bend or twist at the waist, everything feels okay. I'm now typing this list at the bar above the kitchen counter. Less pain makes me want to sleep, though . . . crap. Okay, cold pack tucked into waist of shorts, ( Read more... )

things you never thought you'd need, i make lists, deeply personal, health

I have a couple of friends in the HPDFW group who have gone through quite a bit of disability, Christine and Paul Lacey. If you don't already know them, would it be helpful for you to hook up with them for information?

Yes. At this point having multiple resources for local information would be good.

The best tip I can give you is this (from my own experience with disability) The MINUTE you have a diagnosis and find your ability to work impaired, apply for disability. I waited, thinking to find a solution and get back to work...BIG MISTAKE. I did eventually have to apply, but since they use the average of 2 years prior to application (not to inability to work setting in), the delay changed my "average income" and I now get less than half what I would have gotten.

Also, if you do have an opportunity to work with a group that regularly applies for disability and will help you, take advantage of that resource. MHMR helped me with the paperwork and it made the actual application almost painless...which is completely contrary to what other people have told me of their experience.

Good luck. ~tea~

Thank you. I will be doing so. This is already affecting my ability to work, which isn't great to begin with. I will definitely have to get financial documentation together starting now to have it ready as soon as possible.

I loveyouloveyouloveyouloveyou. I will hug you all I can and in all the ways.

Knife by R.J. Anderson and Fire by Kristin Cashore both have characters with disabilities that people with disabilities have told me are well-handled.

*hugs* I wish I could be more helpful, but any disability organization/governmental experience I have is limited to the UK, Ireland, or Finland, none of which is particularly helpful for you. Georgia Mason from Feed has a disability (zombie eyeballs), and it's a great series. Otherwise, I'm not really sure what to suggest.

You're a scientist. Your role in making my life/the world better is already assumed. Thanks for that, BTW.

*hugs* But I would like to make your specific world a little better, if I could.
