So, uhh...in Maryland, is it legal to turn left on red? What about onto a one-way major highway? I strongly doubt it, but I can't rule it out entirely, because Maryland apparently does allow parking in the right lane of a three-lane highway ( Read more... )

Maryland has one thing in its favor, at least: it's not New Jersey.

Thing is, everywhere but Jersey has that in its favor. ;)

...this coming from someone who's lived just over the PA border her whole life, and is still infinitely amused that it's free to get into Jersey but you have to pay to get out.

Whatever...we don't have to pump our own gas AND it's cheaper than anywhere else in America.

But NJ has the detriment of being home to the single most un-navigable place on the east coast ... Perth Amboy.

And having no left turns doesn't speak well for it, either. ^^;

It is (in general) legal to turn left on red from one one-way road onto another one-way road, if you go from the leftmost lane into the leftmost lane (much like a traditional right-on-red, but leftwards).

That's cool.

I should get a driver's ed book for Maryland, it looks like. I don't believe I ever learned that in VA.

(I imagine it's still necessary to NOT turn left on red if an oncoming car is about ten feet away from your entry to the intersection, though.)

If this is true, I will be relieved that my ignorance has a cause.

It is legal to turn left on red onto a one way street anywhere unless there are specific signs at that intersection prohibiting it. It is also possible for an area or state to specifically make a law against it, much like in NY I believe school buses are not allowed to turn right on red to avoid possible endangering of the children.

in NYC nobody can go right on red.

What do you mean by parking in the right lane of a 3 lane highway?

Route 198 is three lanes wide. People park in the right one (in the town of Laurel) all the time.

A lot of places allow that during certain hours. I'm not that familiar with Laurel, but I know places in Alexandria and DC where the right lane allows parking during non-rush periods.

This is all fine and dandy, but it's very frustrating to not know *when* those periods are (e.g. is 4 pm rush? Obviously 5 is. What about 6?). This is why I always drive in the center lane. I mean, it's a good habit in general, but it's mostly because of that crazy parking thing.
