It wasn’t until two hours later, that Nugent got a call from the unit on the scene. He ended the call and stopped Nick who had been pacing back and forth ever since the last call.

“Okay, I got good news and bad news.”
“Good news.”
“We found Sanders. He’s alive.” Nugent paused and waited till Nick had digested the news. Nick sat down and got up, and gasped for air.
“He’s…. is he okay?” He finally asked.
“He’ll be fine. They are bringing him in for a check up. He inhaled smoke and he’s got some bruises, but he’ll recover.”
“What’s the bad news?”
“The other victims they found from the ruins. Greg and three others are a live, but remaining nine are dead. Apparently they were all there tied down and couldn’t escape. Those nine dead victims were already dead by the time the fire started. The four others didn’t get serious injuries because the fire was detected quickly.”

“Do you what he… what Moore….?”
“What he did to them? Not yet, but I got a theory. This whole thing with Sanders started over a months ago. After that several men who looked like him went missing.”
“You mean….?”
“I think he used them as a substitute and finally moved on to his main target.”
“Greg.”
“Exactly.”
“When do they bring him here?”
“They’re on their way.”

-------------------------------------------------

Nugent knocked on the door and pushed it open.

“Can I come in?”

Nobody answered so he stepped in. Nick had climbed into the same hospital bed, glued to Greg who seemed to be fast asleep. Greg snapped awake when he heard the sound of the footsteps. He nudged Nick awake.

“Morning.” Nugent greeted.”
“What time is it?” Greg croaked.
“Three in the morning. Can you answer some questions? We’ll take your statement late but it would be good for keeping the investigation quick and painless.”
“Sure.” Greg took a water glass from the bedside table and emptied it. He handed it over to Nugent. “Make yourself useful.”

Nugent took the glass and filled it from the tap. “How are you feeling?”
“Throat’s sore and breathing’s kinda raspy.”
“I’ll make this quick. Can you tell me how you were taken from your apartment?”
“I was on the phone and I heard the doorbell ringing. Moore was there, I let him in and when I turned my back for a minute he injected something into me. I just felt a sting in my neck and everything went blurry.”

“And after that?”
“After that I don’t really remember that much. I think he gave me some more meds to knock me out. The first good recollection is when the paramedics were there.”
“Were you….” Nugent looked uneasy. “Did he….?”
“No.”
“Did you know there were other victims in the same house?”
“I dint see any of them.” Greg paused. “One of the paramedics said most of them were dead.”
“Yeah.” Nugent confirmed. “Nine were dead when we found them. One died on the way here, and the guy we thought was you.”
“And Moore?”
“Alive. If you can call it living.”
“What do you mean?”
“He burned really badly, but he’s alive. He’s not going to get better, but he’s not dying either. Things work inside, but the outside looks like raw meatloaf. He’s going to stay like that for as long as he lives.”

Greg could feel Nick wrapping his arm more tightly around him. Burn injuries were a topic Greg was understandably reluctant to talk about. Greg gave him a little pat on his shoulder and turned back to Nugent.

“He’s never gonna face charges either, isn’t he?”
“It doesn’t really seem worth the trouble. The guy’s not going anywhere from his hospital bed. He’s an immobile invalid. Totally helpless.”

“Okay….” Greg sighed. “Listen, they said I can go home tomorrow…. I mean today, if I get some rest first. Can we get back to this later?”
“Of course. Everyone’s more or less sleep deprived right now.” Nugent got up from his chair. “Sleep well.”

-------------------------------------------------

“You know, you don’t need to keep an eye on me all the time.” Greg said as he pulled his shirt on. Catherine had brought some fresh clothes from his apartment and Nick was waiting to take him home.

“I`m not letting you out of my sight. Remember what happened last time.”
“Okay.” Greg grinned. “I can live with that.” He started buttoning his shirt. “Can you do me a favour?”
“What?”
“I was hoping we could just go home and go straight to sleep again. Can you go get my prescription filled while I’m getting ready. They prescribed me some inhaling stuff to clear my lungs.”
“Sure. Pharmacy’s in the first floor, right?”
“How would I know?” Greg handed him the prescription.
“I’ll find it. I’ll be back in a minute.”
“I’ll be here.”

Greg waited a minute and then peeked out of the door. The elevator doors closed and he stepped out. Greg headed to the burn unit and a quick peek at the nurses list told him the room number. He opened the door and walked in.
