Nick rolled out of bed and fell down on the floor face first. He scrambled back to
his feet and went to open the door. Catherine marched right in.

“I know you’re off duty, but would it kill you to keep your phone on?”
“I was asleep and it’s eight in the morning. What do you want?”
“The mother of that missing guy contacted the lab, she’s flying to Vegas today.
Now we just need to find the guy. Again.”

“Who is it?” Greg came out of the bedroom wearing his boxers. His hair was
sticking out to every direction and he rubbed his eyes to wake up.
“That was fast….” Catherine commented. “Nick, can we talk in the living
room? Alone?”
“Sure, can you…?”
“Make coffee?” Greg finished. “Yeah. Go and talk, I’ll be in the kitchen.”

Catherine followed Nick to the living room and closed the door.
“You better have a damn good explanation for this. You told me you had never
seen that guy, and now you’re sleeping with him!”
“I didn’t know him! I mean I did, but I didn’t know I did, and he knew me but
he didn’t know I was me just like I didn’t know he was he, and he couldn’t
remember why he knew me but still didn’t know me while I didn’t know him
although I did.”

Catherine gave him a long look. “Did he drug you?”

---------------------------------------

Five hours later Nick drove Greg to the lab to meet his mother. He waited in the
hallway while the two talked in the break room. After a while he started to feel
like a peeping tom and ended up in the empty A/V-lab.

“Hey.” Greg’s voice came from the door.
“Hey, how is she doing?” Nick took a sip from his coffee mug.
“Relieved. And efficient.”
“How’s that?”
“She’s already handling my affairs. Getting me my papers and all that. She
even called my boss. Or former boss.”

“What do you mean former?”
“I was gone for three months. They got a replacement and after two months
they made her a regular and now they can’t get rid of her.”
“You mean they’d rather boot you out?”
“It’s a difficult situation. If they fire her she can sue them, if I’m fired
I can do the same. They offered me a lump sum in return for leaving quietly.”

“That`s pretty low.”
“Yeah, but… Everything’s gone on. I can’t help it.”
“So what are you going to do?”
“Accept their offer. And my mom told me she would hire me anytime to work in
her company.”
“What kind of a company?”
“Antique dealing. You know, selling expensive old crap to those with old money,
and those who have new money but no sense of class. Did you see that TV-show
Lovejoy?”
“Yeah.”
“That guy had nothing on my mom.” Greg grinned. “She paid the rent and utilities
for my place while I was…. who knows where, so at least I have a home to go
back to.”

Nick’s smile vanished. “You’re going back?”
“Yeah….. I wanted to talk to you about that. I had this idea…. You can say no
anytime-”

“What idea?”
“Well, work was pretty much the only thing that kept me in Frisco. I can stay
in touch with my mom with phones and she’s always travelling, and there’s labs
everywhere so it shouldn’t be too hard to find one in here.”
“In Vegas?”
“You think I’m going too fast.”
“No, I don’t.”
“So, I thought…. If I try to find a place of my own in Vegas, maybe I could stay
with you till I found one, but like I said you don’t have if you don’t-”
“Do you always talk so fast?”
“Yep.”
“When  was the last time you remembered to breathe?”
“Maybe ten minutes ago.” Greg panted. “What do you say?”
“Sound good to me.” Nick took a step closer but failed to remember that he was
still holding his mug. When he tried to wrap his arms around Greg it fell to the
floor and shattered into tiny pieces.

“Shit… Did you get any on yourself?”
Greg didn’t answer. He didn’t even seem to listen. He had gone pale.
“Greg? Greg?”

“Cell phone.”
“What?”
“Cell phone. It was his cell phone.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“The accident. Larry had a meeting and that’s why he left early. I couldn’t get
another ride so he was supposed to drop me off at my place. When we were
driving he had a text message and he tried to read it. He dropped it on the floor.”

“What happened then?”
“He tried to get it and the car drifted to the other side of the road. There was
a truck coming to us and he pulled back to the right side and then…. we went off
the road.”
“Is that the last thing you remember?”
“No…. I was squished between the dashboard and my seat and my head hurt and I
looked at Larry, but he was….. just…. I didn’t even recognise him at first….”
