CSI Las Vegas Main List Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 “Thanks.” Nick closed his phone and rushed to his computer.
“What was that?” Greg asked.
“I just had to check something.” Nick opened his e-mail. “Take a look at this.”
Greg leaned over his shoulder to see the window on the screen.
“It’s an e-mail.”
“Read it. Does it sound familiar?”
“Yeah, who’s it from?”
“You.”
“You’re gonna have to explain that….”
“I called one of my co-workers about the original investigation after you went missing.
You used a screen name TheBigG. I can’t believe I didn’t figure it out before. That’s
why you know so much about me, we’ve been e-mailing for months.”
“Are you serious?”
“You were going to come to Vegas for a vacation and I asked you to stay at my place.
I gave you my address and I guess you wrote it down on that piece of paper.”
“When was that?”
“Look at the date.” Nick opened another e-mail. “Third of December, little after five
PM. The accident happened on the third of December ,before midnight. When you
didn’t answer my mails after that I thought you wanted to call the whole thing off.”
“Wait a minute….” Greg rubbed his temples. “I admit that sounds familiar, but how
come you didn’t recognise my name when you saw my records?”
“You didn’t tell me your full name and didn’t tell you mine. Just first names. And you
said you worked as a lab technician, but you never said where.”
“This is….” Greg buried his face into his palms. “How is it possible that I remember
you and all the ridiculous little things you told me, but I can’t remember myself?”
“I have no idea.” Nick admitted. “But I know somebody who might know.”
“Who?”
“A doctor.” He suggested carefully.
“No, I’m fine, I don’t need a doctor.”
“You’re obviously not fine! I told you how I wet my bed till I was five, can’t you
trust me just a little bit?”
Greg was quiet for a long time.
“Okay.”
“Okay?”
“But if he starts prodding my head I’ll walk out.
------------------------------------------------
“Well?” Nick got up from the waiting room couch. Doctor Mallory walked in leafing
through test results.
“Good new and bad news.” She started. "Which one do you want to hear first?”
“Good news.”
“Physically he`s totally healthy. He has some healed scarring in his scull but they
haven`t caused problems.”
“So what’s wrong with his memory?”
“This is not exactly my area of expertise, but I would say all his symptomsare psycho-
somatic. Has he been through any traumatic events lately?”
“He was involved in a car crash, the driver died.”
“My guess would be that his mind simply pushed it away. When the incident was
too much, his mind shut down to protect itself.”
“Then how can he remember me?”
“Maybe that was a positive thing to him. Human being is a weird creature, we
want to forget negative things, but cling on to those things that are meaningful
to us.”
“So, should I take him to a psychiatrist?”
“He didn’t remember anything before this, right?”
“Right.”
“And now he can bring back things he talked about with you, and he can recognise
information about himself. That’s a good sign. Whatever it is that caused him to
block everything away, is giving up. You need to give him stimulants, talk about his
past and so on. Of course a psychiatrist would be beneficial to him, but in cases like
this the healing starts from the patient himself. He’s obviously starting to recu-
perate.”
“Where’s he now?”
“He fell asleep waiting for the test results. That’s another thing I wanted to talk
about. He seems pretty exhausted. Plus he’s malnourished.”
“Yeah, spending three months on the street without your memory can do that.”
“Have they contacted his family yet?”
“Catherine tried, but his mom is somewhere on a business trip and we can’t
got a hold of her. Dad’s dead and there’s no siblings.”
“Is he staying in Vegas for now?”
“Well, we still need him as a witness for that DUI and hit-and-run and everything
is pretty much up in the air…..” Suddenly Nick remembered something. “Did he
tell you about those headaches?”
“Yes, and like I said he had some scarring on his scull. Although there’s no
real damage, it can cause headaches and nausea long time after the injury.
And his worn-down state doesn’t really help that.”
“So well just wait and see?”
“Basically. You can go wake him up, I need that room in ten minutes.”
Nick walked to the consultation room where Greg was snoring on the exami-
nation table.
“Wake up.” Nick shook him carefully by his shoulder.
“Wha-wha…. Are we done here?”
“You looked pretty done.” Nick grinned. “Get up, we’re going to get some food.
You can go back to sleep after that.”
“Okay….” Greg yawned.
They went back to the parking lot but as soon as they tried to leave the lot a
car drove past them to the exit and forced Nick to quickly turn to the other
direction. Nick glanced at Greg and noticed his reaction. He had gone white
and was almost hyperventilating.
“Stop the car! Stop it!”
Nick pulled over to the side of the road and Greg rushed out. He fell down on
his knees and threw up.
