Chapter 1
Chapter 2

“Hello, mama.” Nick grabbed his mother for a hug.
“Hello, dear. Are you alone? I hoped you would bring Greg with you.”
“No, we’re meeting him at the restaurant. I’ll take you to your hotel first, so
you can settle before dinner.”
“Nicky dear, you will regret that.”
“What do you mean?”
“You’ll understand when you see how many bags I have with me.”

After the waiter had taken their order, Jillian took a sip from her glass of water
and looked at her sons new boyfriend.

“So, Greg… Nicky already told me the basics about you when we talked on the phone.”
“I hope he didn’t tell too intimate details.” Greg grinned and placed his hand on
Nick’s tight. “My little Texan honeybunny is so eager sometimes.”

“No, nothing too intimate. He told me you two work together. Isn’t hard to work
together when you spend you spare time together?”
“Not really, my Nicky just cant get enough of me.” Greg gave Nick a kiss on
the cheek.

“I think I’ll head over to the ladies room before the food comes. I`ll be back
in a minute.” Jillian got up and walked away from the table.

“My little Texan honey bunny?” Nick raised his eyebrows.
“You don’t like that? How bout `My class A breeding bull`?”
“G, I thing you’re enjoying this a bit too much.” Nick commented. His face
was bright red.

“Of course I’m enjoying this, didn’t you see her face?” Greg smirked.
Nick tried to resist, but he had to chuckle. “Okay, I admit. That was pretty funny.”
“And you`re the one who got us into this, so we better make the most of this.”

------------------------------------------------------

“Nicky, I could have taken a cab. You could have gone with Greg.” Jillian opened
the door to her hotel room and walked in.

Nick followed her and closed the door. “Mama, I have tonight off, but Greg had to
go to work. Besides, he came in his own car.”
“I see, dear. Are you in a hurry?”
“No, you have something on your mind?”
“I would like to talk to you about something.”
“About what?”
“About Greg.”
“I should have guessed. So, what do you think of him?”

“Well…” Jillian sat down on her bed. He seems like a nice young man.”
“Why do you sound like there’s a But coming….”
“I’m not sure how to say this… is this some kind of a age crisis?”
“Mama, what do you mean?”
“Remember when your father turned sixty? He suddenly hired a young, blond
secretary. Is this something like that?”
“Mama!”

“Nicholas, don’t be mad at me. But he seems to be so… not your type. He’s
young and I just cant imagine you two having anything in common.”
“He’s over thirty! That’s not young anymore.”
“Still, he’s younger than you. And he seems to be… How could I say it… He’s
from San Francisco, you’re from Texas.”
“What do you mean?”

“I just think he’s… Wouldn’t you like to have someone more stable and normal?
Someone who would be more like you.”

Nick stared at her for a minute. “Mama, listen to me. Greg’s smart, he’s my friend,
he knows what my job is like. He’s been through hell of a lot of shit in the past few
years, so don’t even try to tell me he isn’t stable. He has built that normal from
the ground up quite a few times.”

Both Nick and Jillian were quiet for while. Finally Jillian got up and started
digging her purse. “I’m sorry, Nicky. I shouldn’t have said that, I don’t know him.”

“And shouldn’t have yelled like that.”
“I understand that Nicky.” Jillian sniffed. “I guess I would have reacted like that
too, if I had been in your position.”
“I think I better go home. You probably want to have some sleep.”
“Yes, but Nicky… I’m going to stay here a week. I hope I’ll…” She swallowed
and forced the words out. “..I hope I’ll get to spend more time with you and Greg.”

“Yeah. I’ll… I’ll call you.” Nick opened the door. “Good night, mama.”
He left and closed the door behind him.

Nick marched out of the hotel and got into his car but didn’t make a move to
drive away. Certain questions were rollicking inside his head. Why the hell
did he defend Greg like that? It’s not like Greg would ever find out. After ten
minutes he finally drove off and snapped his cell phone off. Maybe things
would be easier to understand in the morning after a good rest.
