Chapter 1/3 “Would you finally get to the point?” Don demanded. “What message?”
“It was from the Morriston Clinic, they wanted to remind Charlie about his
appointment next week.” Megan explained.
“Why would he need a doctor. He’s fine. And he would tell if something
was wrong.”
“That’s what I thought, so I did some digging. Have you heard about Morriston?”
“No.”
“Guess what their specialty is?”
“Just tell me.”
“They are known for their success stories with IVF processes.”
“IW what?”
“In vitro fertilization. And that’s not all…”
”I’m already clueless, so lets hear it.”
”Charlie’s appointment is with doctor Gerhard. He’s a psychiatrist.”
“I know Charlie’s far from normal, but-”
“Now comes the weird part. Doctor Gerhard is in charge of evaluating couples,
who want to have a child via surrogate.”
“You mean…. Charlie and Colby…”
“I don’t know, but can you come up with some other explanation?”
“No…”
“How do you get your mouth so open and your eyes so wide? Anyway, if it’s true,
it’s a happy thing. Isn’t I?”
“I guess…” Don ran his fingers through his hair. “What do we do now?”
“Don, were not even supposed to know yet. If they are really doing what we think
they are doing, then they’ll tell us about it when the time comes.”
“Your probably right.”
“I’m always right. Now, you have date with that woman and I have date with a
punching bag.”
--------------------------------------------------
When Megan arrived to the office in the morning, Don was slouched over his desk
half asleep. She slapped his shoulder to wake him up.
“Wakey, wakey. Why are you sleeping here?”
Don rubbed his eyes and groaned. “I couldn’t sleep, so I came here.”
“When?”
“Four in the morning.”
“I assume your date wasn’t a success.”
“That’s an understatement. You can’t even imagine what it was like.”
“So, Charlie was right?”
“Yeah. That woman is not playing with a full set of Matzah balls.”
”What did she do?” Megan sat down and positioned herself comfortably.
”The short version… She talked too much.”
”About what?”
”Charlie. Apparently they met in some seminar five years ago, and he made
a lasting impression. When I’m on a date with a woman, I don’t want her
to keep asking about my brother. And like that wasn’t enough, she wanted
me to set up a meeting with him.”
Megan giggled. “Did you promise to do it?”
“I left! When she went to the ladies room, I paid for our food and left.
And then the nightmares started…”
“What kind of nightmares?”
“Same dream every time… An army of little Charlie clones, taking over the
world. Black curly heads as far as the eye could see…”
“That must be one of the weirdest date nights I’ve hear of.”
“It must be…”
“What must be what?” Charlie leaned against Don’s desk and gave him a
worried look. “You look like hell.”
“Thanks.” Don groaned. “How much did you hear?”
“Just that `it must be` something.”
“Good, then you don’t need to know. What do you want?”
“I’m on my way to work. I just dropped by to tell you that Colby’s not coming
today. Remember that cough he had yesterday? It got worse, and now he’s in
bed with a fever.”
“Poor baby.” Megan commented.
“Yeah. I have classes till two, but dad’s staying with him. He’s got a bun in
the oven.”
“He’s got what?” Don was about to choke on his gum.
“Bun in the oven. He’s redoing his own kitchen, so he borrowed mine.”
“And he’s…”
“Baking. It’s not unusual, remember. So there’s really no need for that face.”
“Sorry. Tell Granger to get well soon.”
“I will, but I don’t think he’s coming back for at least few days. He was
vomiting all morning. Me and dad made jokes about his `morning sickness`.”
Charlie chuckled.
“Well, remember he needs a lot of fluids.” Megan interrupted.
“Dad knows. Colby’s in capable hands. Anyway, I think I better go. I wanna grab
a sandwich on the way. Don’t know why, but I’ve been eating really weird combi-
nations lately.”
“Like what?” Megan asked.
“Like pickles and noodles on rye bread with maple syrup.”
“Sounds disgusting.”
“I know. Call me if you need me. Bye.” Charlie bounced to the elevator.
Megan turned to look at Don, who was leaning his head against his knees.
“He’s trying to make me go crazy…” Don murmured.
“You’re exaggerating.”
“No, he’s driving me crazy. Pretty soon the army of mini Charlies attacks,
and we’re all doomed…”
