When the phone rang, Nick had been asleep for less than thirty minutes. He
reached for his cell phone without opening his eyes and snapped it open.
“Hhhmmm…”
“Nicholas, I’ve told you before that’s not the way civilized people answer
their phones.”
“Mom? I got back from work about an hour ago, I’m half asleep…”
“Oh, I’m sorry, dear. I can never remember you’re still working at night.
Shouldn’t you finally switch to the day crew?”
“Dayshift, mom. And I like working nights.”
“Maybe you like them, but I can’t help thinking what happened to you.
And what could have happened.”
“The whole Gordon affair had nothing to do with my shift.”
“I know that. But you are working at night in the dark…It can’t be very
pleasant.”
“That’s why we have flashlights and aaaalll the other modern wonders,
and I’m not alone at crime scenes. Now, why are you calling?”
“Do I need a reason to call my son?”
“No, you don’t, but you never call me without a purpose. What is it?”
“I just wanted to know how you are doing.”
“I’m fine. Anything else?”
“Well, since you asked… Do you remember Larry?”
“Larry who?”
“Larry Weston. Lena’s boy.”
“I have no idea who you’re talking about.”
“You remember the Weston`s. Your father used to go golfing with Henry.”
“I have a vague recollection of them…”
“Good, because Larry is moving to Las Vegas next month, and I thought you
could help him settle. Two boys from Texas together in a strange city and
so on.”
Nick let out a frustrated sigh. “Mom, you’re doing it again…”
“Doing what, dear?”
“Trying to match me up with somebody.”
“Nicholas, I would never interfere with my children’s lives.”
“Yes, you would!”
“Well, maybe just a little bit. But I’m worried about you.”
“Worried?”
“Your there all alone, I… I just hoped you would be happy. With Larry, or with
somebody else. Can’t you just meet Larry and see how it goes? Maybe you’ll
like him.”
“Mom, it’s not gonna happen, so stop that.”
“Why won’t you even try-” Jillian Stokes paused for a minute. “Wait a second…
Are you seeing somebody? Is that why you can’t see Larry?”
Nick though about it for a moment. He was a terribly liar, but if it put an end
to his mothers matchmaking attempts it may actually be worth it.
“Maybe.” He answered carefully.
“Oh Nicky, that’s wonderful! Why didn’t you just say it? How long have you
been seeing him?”
“For a while.” Nick tried to keep his answers short. If he really started to
tell elaborate lies, his mom would know right away.
“Where did you meet him?”
“Hmm…”
“At work?”
“Yeah…”
“Is it someone you work with?
“Well… I…. I mean… yeah….”
“Really? I met most of your co-workers when I was there with your father.
Who is it?”
“Mom, it’s too early to talk about-”
“Nicky, just tell me who it is.”
Nick remained silent for a while, pondering his options. He could always say
they had broken up if his mother ever wanted to actually meet his boyfriend.
He rewinded the list of co-workers in his mind. Then he said it. It was just a
little little white lie. But at that point Nick had no idea how complicated the
situation would get.

Nick was about to finish his shift when he ran into Greg in the locker room.
“Hey, I was looking for you! Haven’t seen you here all night.”
“Yeah, we had gig in the middle of nothing. Sand and rocks.” Nick said.
“And a body.” Greg added.
“That too. She was decapitated, we spent half the night going through the
area to find the head.”
“Sounds like fun. Greg grinned. “Wanna go get some breakfast?”
“With the gang?”
“With me. I want to talk to you about something.”
“Okay, I’ll just get my stuff.” Nick shoved some of his spare clothes to his
back bag. “What do you want to talk about?”
“It’s kinda… well, one of those topics we better handle outside of the lab.
It happened yesterday, but I didn`t see you in the lab so I couldn`t ask....”
“Just tell me what it is.”
“I want to ask you something.”
“Go ahead.”
“And I would like to get an honest answer.”
“Sure.”
“Why did you mom call me, and why does she wanna have dinner with
the two of us when she comes to Vegas tomorrow?”
