Epilogue Chapter 1 Nick leaned back on the break room couch and glared at Warrick who had taken the seat next to the table. The glaring match seemed to last an entire eternity, till they were interrupted. Sara barged in looking absolutely pissed off.
“Stokes, you better have damn good explanation.”
“What did I do now?”
“Well, you should know! But I know you must have done something, because I know what Greg is like when you two are fighting.”
“It’s really none of your business-”
“I had to listen a ten minute lecture about how dishonest men are, and all I wanted was my results!”
“Yeah, bitching about how awful men are is usually your gig.” Warrick grunted and poured himself some more cold coffee. “Did you get your results?”
“I had to tear them form his hand. If I had stayed there few more minutes he probably would have started singing “I will survive”. If I have to go there again today, I’ll have to strangle him.”
“He wouldn’t do that.” Nick said and shot her a tired glance. “He’s more of a “Staying Alive” kinda guy.”
“I don’t care if he starts serenading “You’re so Vain” for you, but you better do something about this. Last I heard he was telling Catherine they should set up a support group for the victims of lying men.”
“What did she say?”
“I don’t know, I got out of there as fast as I could, but I did see them through the window and Greg was beating up hand puppet. So whatever you did, must have been pretty bad.”
She eyed Nick and Warrick, her gaze moving form one man to the other and back again. Warrick focused on his cold coffee and Nick did his best to avoid her eyes.
“Wait, wait… he’s not just mad at you.” She finally stated. “He’s mad at both of you. What you could you possibly…” Her face turned blank and her mouth was left hanging open for a while. “Forget it, I don’t want to know.”
“It’s not-” Nick started, but Sara’s frantic hand waves stopped him. Her face was white as a sheet.
“No! I don’t want to hear it!”
“Sara-”
“What is this, crime lab goes Melrose Place? I didn’t want to know!”
“You don’t even know-”
“And you wonder why I’m suspicious about men! That’s why! You guys can’t keep it in your pants even when you’re dating each other.” She snapped a rolled newspaper from the rack and gave Nick a swift smack on the head. Warrick tried to dock, but she was too fast. “One more reason not to trust men.” She slammed the paper to the table and marched out.
“What did she think we did?” Nick stammered. He touched the tender spot on his head and hissed.
“I think I know.” Warrick groaned got up to rummage the small freezer box in the fridge. “You want frozen peas?”
“Who keeps from peas in the break room?”
“Who cares?” Warrick tossed one bag over to Nick and pressed another one on his own sore head. “And next time someone brings a paper here, we gotta hide the Sunday supplement. That’s too heavy for my head.”
-------------------------------------
Nick didn’t see Warrick again till the end of the shift. He walked into the locker-room when Warrick was pulling his backbag out of his locker.
“Did you talk to him?”
“I tried.” Nick sat down on the bench. “He didn’t answer his phone, so I send couple text messages. No answer.”
“Why didn’t you just go to his lab?”
“Grissom send him home early after he did that interpretive dance in the middle of the hallway.”
“Was it any good?” Warrick chuckled. “I missed it.”
“I didn’t see it live, but Archie got it on tape.”
“Are you gonna go see him?”
“Yeah, and so are you.”
“I am?”
“I’m not taking the blame for this alone!” Nick pulled of his lab coat and shoved it into the locker. “You’re coming with me and you’ll explain your own part.” His phone let out a short beep and he pulled it from his pocket. “From Greg.”
“Is he burning your stuff on the parking lot?”
“No.”
“One of my ex-girlfriends did that…”
“I’m supposed to meet him at my place.”
“Good.”
“And you too.”
“Me?”
“Your place after shift, take Warrick with you.” Nick shoved him the small screen. “If I’m going to get an earful, you’ll be there to share it. Like it or not.”
-------------------------------------
“Are you sure this’ll help?” Warrick asked when Nick opened the door to his apartment.
“No, but it can’t hurt.” Nick clutched the bakery box against his chest to keep it steady and closed the door behind them. Greg was waiting for them in the middle of the living room, his hands crossed tightly across his chest.
“Chocolate doughnut?” Nick offered. “We got them just for you.”
“Nice try. We need to talk.”
“Good, because-”
“I’ll rephrase that: I’ll talk, you’ll listen.” He sat down on the couch while Nick and Warrick stayed standing awkwardly in front of him. “I`ve had time to think about this since I got off work early. When we had that one night test-drive, you liked it, right?”
“Yeah, I-”
“I’m talking here. You liked it, Warrick liked it and I liked it. You could have told me the truth and saved us from this whole mess. You got awkward and you send Warrick into that whole “whoring around Vegas with look-alikes” tailspin, when we could have made an arrangement that would have been satisfactory for all. Every Thursday from nine to five or something.”
Nick and Warrick shared a confused look.
“This is how it’s gonna be. We all got tomorrow night off, so we’ll see tomorrow if we can work this out. Till then you’re still in the doghouse.” He turned to Warrick. “And you’re… in the doghouse driveway.”
“So… what exactly do you have in mind for tomorrow?” Nick asked.
“You two will make it up to me.” Greg stated like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “Any way I want, as long as I want and in any position I want. And that sounded a lot more porny than it did in my head…”
“And you want both of us…?”
“You’ll both be here around three. That should give you some time to sleep and gather your strength. You oldies need all the rest you can get.” He took a step closer and pressed a harsh kiss on Nick’s lips. Before Nick could get too into it, he pulled back and planted a similar kiss on Warrick`s lips. He removed his lips and took a moment to grin at the dual expression of confusion.
“And I’ll tell you right now for future situations.” He slapped Nick on the back of the head and moved on to give the same treatment to Warrick. “Don’t be an idiot or you’ll mess things up again!”
“That hurt!” Nick yelled and stroked his tender head. “Sara already gave us both a piece of her mind, right on that same spot.”
“I know.” Greg commented. He grabbed the bakery box from the Nick’s loose grasp. “And I’ll take the doughnuts too. Be on time.” He shoved a doughnut into his mouth and marched out.
“Not exactly what I was expecting…” Warrick held his head gingerly and shot Nick a crooked grin. “You got any ice packs?”
