Father's day

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there and to all those people who fill those shoes even though they are not "Dad". I'm thinking of all the single moms who fill both roles and my heart goes out to them. I remember the first awful Father's Day without Liam and how everyone in Bree's class had to make Father's Day cards. My daughter came home ( Read more... )

Your daughter is amazing and wise beyond her young years. I am moved to tears by how she handled that first father's day. Both by her sensitivity and her teacher's insensitivity.

Let me clarify because her teacher was very sensitive. Her teacher had met Liam on the very first day of kindergarten and just a few days later received a note from me explaining he was among the missing. From that day forward, she both called me and wrote me about Bree's progress in her class. She couldn't pull Bree out when they were making the cards but when Bree came to her and said she didn't have a daddy, Ms. Ring explained to her that her daddy was still watching over her even though he couldn't be with her and that her mommy was filling both roles now. She suggested that Bree make the card for me. I'm going to edit the post to reflect that because Ms. Ring was all kinds of supportive and wonderful and we couldn't have made it through kindergarten without her love and support.

Ah. That's actually wonderful to hear. Mrs. Ring sounds like a wonderful teacher. My apologies for visiting the Island of Conclusions (you know, the one you get to by jumping)

:) LOL. No apology needed, I realized when you responded how vague the post was. She's an amazing teacher. My daughter was lucky to have her.

I think that's one of the few stories I've heard of people handling that situation well, with the sensitivity and creativity necessary. Which is kind of sad, but very happy-making as well. I'm sure it has happened numerous times to many people, but hearing it makes me glad there are still kind hearted people in this world that care.

Happy Father's Day, Elle :)
