I think that by "legitimate", Akin was implying that some rape isn't really rape. So it's not so much that some rape is "legitimate rape" which is okay, but rather that some rape is "legitimate rape" and that's the rape we should care about.

Absolutely. Because we all know that most women who claim rape are lying to get back at an ex-boyfriend or screwed around a lot or agreed to a date with the guy or were wearing provocative clothing or...or...{add your own insane motivation].

There's a positive element in the Romney statement:

"Gov. Romney and Congressman (Paul) Ryan disagree with Mr. Akin's statement, and a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape," Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said.

They can't do that, and overturn Roe v. Wade, at the same time.

Something to think about.

This is before the election, and they need votes from women in swing states to win.

If they in, they will no longer need something from the electorate.

Even for politicians, the Mittens campaign is setting records for changing positions when electorally expedient.

Interestingly enough, the laws that people like Akin try to put into effect can be described the same way, if you think about it.

This is SOP among a certain right-wing type. For the last few years, they've been busily spreading the lie that "if it's really rape, the woman can't get pregnant, so exceptions for rape just let women lie their way into an abortion." That is from memory, but pretty much verbatim from a whole bunch of these mofos.

Ditto, but it was out at the fringes. Now they're actively trying to move it into the mainstream. Note that a House candidate had no problem saying it with videotape rolling; apparently he was convinced that, at least among Republicans, this was an article of faith.

By "legitimate rape", Akin obviously meant "The so rare as to be practically nonexistent instances where the woman really was forced to have sex against her will, as opposed to the vast majority of cases where she was willing but afterward screamed 'Rape!' just to get the poor innocent man in trouble."

You practically quote Bryan Fischer of the American Family Council. His tweet today:

"What Akin meant by "legitimate rape:" actual forcible rape, not consensual sex that later gets called rape. Come on, people."

What's disturbing is, despite the many cruel and insane things Fischer says on a regular basis, millions of people agree with him and support him.
