I took this one while I was still in the Air Force (obviously).
My flight leader was given PCS (permanent change of station) orders shortly before I was due to separate from the AF. When a pilot PCSes from his squadron/base, they do what's called a fini-flight. This is the final flight that they make with their squadron. It usually ends with the pilot exiting his jet on the flightline and getting shot in the face with a few bottles of exploding champagne.
This fini-flight was a little special, because an IMAX crew was on the base, filming Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag. His fini-flight exit "ceremony" was filmed as part of that movie.
My flight leader was a pretty cool dude, and when he asked me to use the flight camera to snap some candid shots of his fini-flight, I agreed without hesitation. I got a lot of really great shots that day, and this was one of them. He was sitting on the side of his jet (an F-16), waiting for IMAX to set their shit up so they could film him climbing down after his flight.
The picture has a very "Top Gun" feel to it. I think I missed my calling.
