Lavender had almost not made it on time after her long night out with Colin at RollerDisco in Cholchester. She was glad that she had laid out her clothes for the grand opening along the desk the night before. She slid the velvet dress she had bought at Hex Me Up! on and slipped long, dangling golden earrings into her lobes. Makeup was easy with her wand, and she was glad that she had practiced these charms for so long with Parvati back in her Gryffindor dorm room. If she had been a muggle, she would have been LATE.

But, as she had magic to help her, she apperated in front of Ollivander’s shop at 8am, just as he was unlocking the door.

“Couldn’t walk the block?” he asked, eyeing her suspiciously. “So lazy that you had to apparate?”

“I just didn’t want to be late, sir,” said Lavender, a bit breathlessly. She bit her lip and then grinned at him. “Today is the big day!”

“Yes,” said Ollivander, a bit absent mindedly. “So it is. Come along then. You ought to re-charm the curtains before the people start coming.”

Lavender went straight to work. She had bought the curtains and new cushions herself - deep, dark, rich purple. Ollivander had still had his old cushion in the backroom, but the purple had been a bit gray from all of it’s time in the sun. Last week Lavender had tried a bit of fancy wand-work in trying to transfiguring the curtains to have images of little sparkling wands flashing silver and blue sparks. Ollivander had claimed he hated it at first, but then seemed a bit warmed up to the idea. He told her he might make him take them off when the grand opening was over, but Lavender didn’t mind. She was proud of the work.

At 9am, everything was set. She wished that Ollivander had planned something spectacular, but he wasn’t that type of man. At 9am he carried a wooden sign that said, “Ollivander’s, Now Open,” and set it outside. Lavender stood at the counter, but nothing happened. No mad dash of people or first years hurrying to get their wand. It felt as boring as the time when she had to do all of the cleaning. She sighed, leaning against the wood of the counter. Hopefully someone would come in soon.

“I’ll be down in my workshop,” said Ollivander. He didn’t seem surprised that no one was here. “Call me if someone needs a wand.” He lowered his brows at her. “Please do not put a wand in anyone’s hand.”

“Of course, sir,” said Lavender in a cheerful voice. As soon as he was gone she went back to her frowning. I thought I was going to like my work, she thought.
