It's interesting to me (and by "interesting" I mean "annoying") that people always fish for explanations when a young woman, or someone people perceive to be so, dates an older man. The big one is "gold digger," the next down is "looking for Daddy," the next I sometimes hear is "wanting to learn from someone more experienced."

It's just much easier to categorize and dismiss. As a race, we spend most of our waking hours discriminating in some fashion or other. It's too exhausting to take everyone as individuals, so let's just label 'em, shall we?

and this works okay for people passing on the street... thug/not-thug, danger/not-danger, hot/not-hot, etc. Our assumptions and dismissals don't matter, because they are so ephemeral. But when we start doing that to people we are relating to in any fashion, from checker at the grocery store to co-worker, it just gets fucked up. And pisses me off, frankly.

Great post. Yeah, I'm uncomfortable with this concept (I saw a recent Dan Savage extra about the "campsite rule", which is a great concept if that type of relationship is your kink, but none of the letters even really acknowledged that it might not be someone's kink -- that two people with an age gap could actually be equals or long-term partners.) Ironically, I still intend to exploit it when I get back into the sex industry, but hey. It's better than office work, which is really Not My Kink ( ... )

Yes yes yes! It was that stupid "campsite rule" that got me snarly, that and a throwaway "any younger woman with an older man is likely a gold digger -- rule that out first" comment somewhere else.

Uh, I'm the top? The campsite rule applies to ME first, if it applies to anyone...
