Ryoma/Sakuno & Eiji/Oishi for
sonkikyo It's a date, really, although Sakuno isn't sure exactly what is and isn't a date and thinks that perhaps this isn't a date after all unless Ryoma holds her hand at some stage. All the girls at school have told her that is what boys do when they take you out on a date - they hold your hand and pay for your meal and sometimes give you a kiss on the cheek after they've walked you home. The mere thought of all that makes Sakuno blush and giggle nervously, then blush and giggle nervously again as she knocks over the glass of pop she was reaching for. Ryoma shoots her a slightly irritated look that may have worried her if she didn't know by now that 'slightly irritated' is his default, although that doesn't stop her from stumbling over her words and blushing and giggling as she tries to apologize and clean up the mess at the same time. She doesn't want to blush of course, she's been told to be more assertive by her friends - boys like that apparently, although only as long as you go along with everything they say. She doesn't want to giggle either, but it's a nervous reaction she can't control, and not at all like the silly, silly laugh that the others had tried to teach her in an attempt to gain Ryoma's affection. Sakuno has always thought that her friends advice was very well meaning, but just a little too strange to really abide by.
In the end it is Oishi that cleans up the spill, all warm smiles and forgiving gazes even while his partner laughs beside him. The golden pair confuse Sakuno, who are definitely on a date and who are definitely holding hands under the table, because everyone at school says that boys liking boys is icky, except for when it comes to the Golden Pair where it is instead really, really, hot. Even some of the boys think that, although they rarely say it out loud and the only reason Sakuno knows such a thing is because it was whispered to her in class one day. Sakuna has seen them play so she doesn't think of them in the way the others do, instead sensing that they're a mere extension of each other's souls. It would be nice if Ryoma thought of her like that, although Sakuno would settle for him thinking of her at all.
When conversation starts up again, and their possibly/probably-not-really double date gets back on course, they talk tennis. Well, the other three talk and Sakuno listens, although occasionally she pipes up with some little snippet. She has always loved the way Ryoma becomes a different person when tennis is brought into the picture, and while he is not as much a scattering of emotions as Eiji is (she really doesn't think he should be jumping up on the table to make his point, although she doesn't say anything), Ryoma still becomes that little bit brighter, just a tad more touchable. He can talk for hours about tennis, she knows, and just as she is settling herself in and allowing herself to be lulled by his voice, Ryoma suddenly jumps in his seat and glares darkly at Oishi. Oishi's eyes are saying something that Sakuno can't understand, and Eiji is laughing at them all again, bringing annoyed glares from those in the booth opposite them. It doesn't matter anyway, because when Ryoma suddenly starts talking again he is talking to her and asking her things about school and how her weekend was and has she seen any good movies lately? They're not the sorts of things Ryoma normally talks about, and he has a little bit of trouble with at first, but soon they're talking and chatting and she's holding an actual conversation instead of observing one.
And she has always loved watching Ryoma talk, but actually being able to talk with him is something else. This time, it's Oishi and Eiji who occasionally join in, although after a while they start having their own conversation, one that Ryoma never seems to feel the need to join in. When Eiji finally says something about how the babies need to get home to bed otherwise people will think they're doing something scandalous, Sakuno finds herself blushing and giggling again, desperately wishing she had a pillow to smother her face in. Eiji and Oishi are going home together (giggle, blush, die of embarrassment), and Ryoma and Sakuno part ways at Sakuno's train station. Ryoma doesn't hold her hand and he most certainly doesn't kiss her (and Oishi had paid for all of their meals), but just as her train comes he smiles hesitantly.
Most definitely a date.
She smiles brightly, widely, so hard it almost hurts. Then, with a confidence that really isn't her own but which she doesn't mind using for the moment anyway, she leans and gives him the briefest of kisses on his cheek. Ryoma doesn't say anything as she leaves, looking so stunned and with the hint of a blush dusting across his nose she gets into the train. She waves brightly goodbye as the train carries her away, and just before Ryoma is out of sight the tennis ace somehow manages to wave back.
Sakuno ends up blushing and giggling all the way home.
