Cosmo Canyon and Icicle Inn mirror each other a lot, don't they? Both are seemingly independent of Shin-Ra...

Cait Sith actually tells you a little later on that Bugenhagan used to work for Shinra (which was a WOAH moment for me because I had never seen this dialogue on previous playthroughs), he doesn't specify what his job was, only that he wasn't involved in buying weapons or mako. Vincent also tells you the machines in Cosmo Canyon were a gift from Gast. Looks like the Cosmo Canyon/Icicle Inn connection is pretty deliberate.

Ooh, cool! I remembered the Bugenhagen moment but not the Vincent one. Gotta love how even the wise grandpa figure is shady in this game though.

- The illusion. So horrible to watch. I get the feeling that on some level Cloud knows exactly what's coming from the moment it starts, accusing Sephiroth from trying to make him believe that he was never in Nibelheim. Meanwhile Sephiroth knows exactly what strings to pull: claiming Cloud's just a failed copy of Sephiroth himself, that nothing about him is real, and also mocking Tifa, who knows that something is off about Cloud and doesn't want to face that. She and Cloud are both in denial, only Cloud is way deeper in. I feel so sorry for both of them ( ... )

- The train station flashback. Tifa finds Cloud sitting in the rain (it rains in the slums?) and doesn't recognize him, while Cloud recognizes her immediately. Tifa's happy to see him, but is confused when Cloud claims that they saw each other five years ago, when Nibelheim burnt. She finds out that something is wrong about him and keeps him around so that she'll figure out what is up with him, and because she doesn't want the guy she likes to wander off to who-knows-where when he's obviously not all right. Her behavior in the game isn't hard to figure out once you start thinking about it ( ... )
