In the end, of course, it was required that Aeris die, so she could direct the lifestream to attack Meteor. However, that really has no bearing or not on if she knew, at the City or before.
I have to admit I'm now leaning a bit towards the middle now, especially with just how much it looks like acceptance as she's skewered. Again, that doesn't really support one way or the other.
I guess the 'sacrifice' thing comes because it's only once Aeris dies that Holy is activated, as well as the whole thing about "her prayer reaching the planet" seeming like it's connected to her spirit reaching the planet as well, i.e. dying. But having looked over the script again to try and work it out, I don't think there's any real right or wrong answer.
It's really telling that in the scene when Cloud is upside down whereas Nanaki (in my version) seems to be trying to get his attention, Tifa's having her own more subtle breakdown. She's not even trying to talk to him instead she's just staring blankly into space until they have to escape.
