I made the icon this morning in sheer exasperation at the recent meta. The amount of fannish entitlement that abounds everywhere is gob-smacking. I'm still trying to interpret "That pairing squicks me so I'll unsub from the newsletter for a couple of weeks until the fuss dies down" posted on a private journal, not a comm as "teh Evil John/Rodney shippers are trying to drive everyone else outa da fandom, oh noes!" -- but I guess that I don't have the right kind of distorting lenses in ( ... )

Hee! I don't know what you mean: what is this entitlement you speak of?

:D

Regarding meta, I already knew you are braver than me: I am very wary of meta myself, because I so rarely agree with any of them, regardless of the topic. Even the nicest ones -and the majority of the fandom, any fandom, is remarkably nice- get me itching to reply and it is so easy to misunderstand a written opinion into an attack to one's beliefs. I hope I always remember to try to avoid it as much as possible.

Consider the recent race debate for instance: why is it that only racial minorities -which by the way is my case, though I do not believe that entitles me to insult others about their supposed political stance- were authorized to have an opinion without being slapped with highly offensive adjectives? Why is it that everyone suddenly decided to state how racism was a bad thing instead of actually doing something about it, like say, vote against politicians who promote it? And why did anyone suppose that we'd suddenly want to read about ( ... )

Not so very brave, really. I posted a short, we're-all-reasonable-people-and-the-fandom's-a-big-place response to the OP in this kerfuffle, then after thinking about it some more and re-reading the intemperate post, went back and deleted it--I was damned annoyed at being tarred as a wicked oppressor. I did think about posting again and saying something robust like "bollocks!", but, like you, I'd rather not seek conflict for its own sake. The fandom can wank well enough without any help from me. As indeed it did.

There are some fascinating thoughts to be had about privilege, of course there are. The other LJ poster I mentioned is very sharp to point out the privilege I'd have, being white (at the moment, very pink since I spent the day in the sun, gardening), but doesn't seem to see her own privilege. She's evidently very intelligent. She gives no quarter to those who aren't privileged in the IQ department, though. I'll bet it never even crosses her mind. And although I'm white and also not totally unintelligent (although not ( ... )

Hah. This has nearly happened to me more than once! Irked beyond measure, or simply feeling like I had something to say which I feel is helpful, I type in a post. Then I realize that my response will be totally misunderstood and if I am quick enough, I delete it or do not post it. If not, I start a major wank all by myself. Heh ( ... )

I tend to avoid meta like the plague as well, but there are times when I come out of my anti-meta cave to learn the news of fandom. I just rather watch the show and be happy.

McShep is mah happy place..

He he he... I do not know what makes anyone like one pairing with such besotted fondness, but as long as it makes us happy -while selling Stargate related merchandise- I really do not see the harm! In fact, I think we are fulfilling our civic duty by supporting the entertainment industry. Go us!

And may I say your checking out fandom events from time to time may be far too well-intentioned, though it is entirely to your credit; as long as we try to remember that in fandom, most participants tend to be over-emotional and fly off the handle at the least provocation.

PS: I have just realized this made it to the noticeboard? I think I'd better beg off before my ill-considered words offend someone (I am incapable of writing or doing anything creative, but I am horribly good at that!)

Wha? Overemotional fans! Zomg! Say it isn't so! LOL

That's how I found this post,sga_newsletter the greatest waster of time at work!

Overemotional fans!

Yes, I know this must come as a shock to you, poor innocent flower! And the newsletter is indeed a wonderful resource: you wouldn't want to miss a story or an SGA event, would you? What if you were *gasp* without an internet connection for a few days?

How would you ever make up for the lost time away from your fandom? Not that we are addicted, I am sure.

I can walk away at any time, myself.

the announcements regarding season 4 also seem to have been decided entirely based on my own personal wishes, though apparently going squarely against the wishes of what sounds like the entire universe! Oh well, win some, lose some...

OMG! That is exactly how I feel! Most of my friends list is morning and upset about Elizabeth leaving and I am like "YAY! Sam!". I almost don't want to mention how excited I am over Sam's arrival in fear that it might seem like I am rubbing their prefered characters' departure in their faces...I also just changed to a Sam&Vala layout so seeing Vala in Atlantis with Sam even just a few times would be fantastic.

I would really prefer if Sam didn't make Rodney look like an idiot, so cue the cuteness-enhancing powers and her and Sheppard playing tug-of-war with confused!Rodney as the rope! And Teal'c and Teyla can do their "What's wrong with these people?!" faces and go off to meditate and Vala and Ronon can talk about hair trinkets and leather.

You're kidding me! I am not the only one to feel this way?

Hold it! Can you prove that you are not a sock puppet, you controversial fan you?

:D

*off to check out your Sam/Vala layout, because I know someone I need to convert to SGA femslash and so far she's been resisting and complaining that SGA is 'full of men, dirty men, and slash and... and where is the femslash and... ', so you see my problem*

I think that my layout is proof I am not a sock puppet...but if you must be extra sure, here's an old post on Beckett and Weir as regular characters and team dynamics on SGA. I also briefly speak about Sam/Vala on my commentary of The Quest Pt1.

Hear hear. I am absolutely thrilled about Sam in Atlantis and really am looking forward to any Sam/Rodney interaction as they are BEYOND ADORABLE together. Good to see others also are not full of the (stupid stupid) Sam hate.

But, but... what's not to love about Sam? At least now that we do not have to put up with the disgracefulness of the O'Neill crush anymore ( ... )

Granted, she is a bit of a Mary Sue, but she is so cute.

umm now which of the writers is the Sam!MarySue? That brings a whole new meaning to Jack/Sam. heh

I cannot imagine her ever taking decisions as wrong-headed and morally dubious as Elizabeth, call me unfair...

I wasn't a hugest fan of Weir for that reason when the show began until I actually saw Torri at a convention. I thought Torri was adorable so I gave Weir another shot. I could see in places Shep/Weir and tried to read some of the fic, but it wasn't I dunno..nasty enough. *shrugs*

I still love Torri, but cannot stand Weir. I adore Sam so I'm looking forward to the sexual tension Rodney squirming! between McShep and her.

OMG, do you know how long I' ve been wondering that! Years, years, I tell you, because it is the most obvious question fans never ask at conventions (well, more discreetly and without using the work Mary-Sue of course!)

Imagine being a fly on the wall during an SGA writing brainstorming session... The dialog would tell us a lot about the respective Kinsey rating of all present!
