Oct 21, 2010 00:24

Title: Flying Solo
Fandom/Pairing: Parks and Recreation, Ann/Leslie
Rating: PG
Summary: Ann figures out why things never worked out with Mark.
Spoilers: Takes place after the second season finale.
Length: 10,200 words
Notes: Thanks to lavender_basil for the awesome beta!

'Ann, what's up?' Andy says, and it's not what he says but how he says it. The tone of his voice, the set of his shoulders - all of it radiates the same disappointed wariness Ann felt every time he showed up unexpectedly after their breakup. )

I...there are no WORDS for how hard I heart this. The CLEARLY intentional subtext between these two delights me, and it's so blatant that they pretty much ARE canon, and this is almost as good as having the show back, and my withdrawal is SO BAD. So this is awesome and THANK YOU for writing it. Seriously, it's like having a newly-discovered episode. (Poor Jerry. Even in fanfic he can't get a break. Hee. Though his ad worked, so I guess that's a break...as close as Jerry ever gets anyway ;) )

This fic seriously reminds me why I want to be Leslie Knope's best friend. She is SO positive and she cares so much about EVERYONE but especially Ann. And she does things like making custom flag day shoes and getting her face painted. And Ann totally would do something like pretending to have supplies she really was going out to buy.

My only disappointment is that the title isn't Ann Perkins Finds True Love on Flag Day, because I'm a Simpsons dork ;)

Oh, thank you, this was such a great comment to get! Ann and Leslie are such a fun pairing on the show, they have such a sweet dynamic that I really love, and so I was a little nervous about writing them - I'm so glad the story worked for you!

Hee! If only you'd been there over the last two days before I posted the story when I couldn't figure out what to call it!

Oh, man. I don't even 'ship these two that much (sometimes I have issues with best friends not being allowed to be just best friends without ~subtext, which is a little silly of me) but things about their friendship genuinely get to me, and those things are what you highlighted and built on in this, and I absolutely adored that.

This is a fantastic story - Ann's voice is spot-on, perfect for the kind of changes in mindset she must be going through - all the character voices are perfect, even that one scene with Tom. And above everything, you nailed Leslie. Her enthusiasm and her brilliance at her job and her sweetness - all of those things are the reasons I adore her, and the focus on that made it obvious that Ann would adore her, too. I love Ann helping her out in tiny ways but also clearly getting something from spending time with her ( ... )

Oh wow, thank you so much for this lovely comment! It was so great to read what you wrote about Leslie, because how you describe her is exactly how I see her, and how I wanted her to come across in the story - yay! And I'm glad their relationship in the story worked for you - it's funny, I was like you in that I initially didn't really ship them, and saw them as a sweet friendship (which I agree is too rarely seen on TV, especially between women), and then I saw this vid and it was like a switch got flipped in my brain, and I found myself writing this story!

Thank you again for all of your kind words and for taking the time to comment - I really appreciate it!

Thank you so much, I'm so glad you enjoyed the story!

I love your icon - I love Ron, too! One of the things I was bummed about was that I couldn't find a way for Ron to make his way into the story. I think he's one of the funniest things about the show and his relationship with Leslie is so fun to watch.

Thanks again for the comment!

Oh man, I was so excited when I saw that you'd written fic, and that it was Parks and Rec, and oh God, now that I've read it I just love it so much.

This is so perfectly in canon, first of all, and I just love the mood - the wistful, trying-to-figure-it-out of it all. I was relating to Ann so hard, and the device of the WEBSITE -- so clever and hilarious and sad all at once. And your Leslie is perfect -- I adore her character so much, how positive and wonderful she is, and that's all here so well. And the final payoff! God, this made me happy and all emotional all at once. Amazing fic -- I've been in a mood lately where I've barely been able to concentrate on any fic at all, but this kept my interest to the point where I couldn't stop reading it, which is unheard of these days. I feel like I'm not even expressing my enthusiasm well enough, but right now this is one of my favorite fics ever.

Oh, thank you so much for this awesome comment, it's so great to hear that you liked the story! The website was probably the thing in the story I was most worried about (I told my beta that were it to actually exist, its address would be www.plotdevice.com), but I could not figure out a way to get the story chugging along without it, so I'm super glad to hear that it worked for you. And that Leslie came across well, because I love her, too!

Really, I can't tell you how happy this comment made me - thank you so much!
