Top Ten Episodes of Doctor Who (According to Me) #6-10

Dec 06, 2011 11:40

My top five episodes were really easy to choose, but numbers 6-10 were a LOT harder, so here's a list of some episodes that almost made the final cut.

Honorable mentions: School Reunion. I REALLY enjoy this episode and I cannot understand people who use this episode to hate on Rose. She was not the only one acting petty and immature in this ( Read more... )

the villain is Giles! In this episode the plot is only so-so, but the character stuff is so strong, I don't really mind.

These two things sum up my feelings on School Reunion. Tony Head makes for a creepy and nicely animalistic villain, y/y?

When I'm writing these types of lists myself, I generally count double eps as a single entity. When it comes to Doomsday, though, I separate it. The two eps put together are more of a single story than some of the multi-eps, sure, but it's only Doomsday that I really love out of those two. You're absolutely right about the plot issues, as well. I just ignore that, mostly, in favour of the so-very-pretty sadness.

Ok, so the actual sci-fi plot with the scavengers eating people isn't all that compelling, but this episode is PERFECT from an emotional and character standpoint.

If you reword this so that 'scavengers eating people' is replaced with [insert alien menace here], this is pretty much true of all Paul Cornell's stuff, no? He really is better at emotion than plot. Or, you know, logic.

I watched School Reunion before I watched Buffy so although I knew that Tony Head was Giles, I didn't fully appreciate him in "School Reunion" until after I watched Buffy. But now I find myself wishing that we'd gotten an episode where Giles turns evil.

IKR? I'm pretty sure I remember hearing something about Tony Head pretty much begging Joss to let him be evil for a bit, but it somehow never happened. WHY NOT JOSS? WHY NOT?

I actually legit love the plot of Doomsday. Like, I would watch it a hundred times over if it weren't for ALL THE SADNESS. XD

And I AM SHOCKED AND APPALLED to see s6 making it anywhere on the list, but The Girl Who Waited was damn good, it's gotta be said. Also Rory and Amy calling out Eleven for being a douche ranks pretty high for me.

Idk. To me Doomsday is pretty generic "Daleks try to take over and/or destroy the world again. Also, Cybermen!". I find the whole ghost/footprint doesn't look like a shoe thing to be somewhat interesting as well as Torchwood's involvement in the whole debacle. But the plot still isn't AMAZING. It's just good enough to support and not take away from the brilliant character stuff that is happening in the episode. So it does its job, I guess.

TGWW is SO GOOD THOUGH. I wish I could take it away from the horror that is the rest of series 6. I am pretty sure that half the reason I love it is because Amy and Rory call Eleven out for being an ass. But like, it's a clever and pretty original plot, and the character stuff is on-point! I love it! (lol It's also the only Moffat Who episode that made it anywhere on my Top Ten list).

Lol I am a sucker for Daleks, tbh. I love Daleks taking over the world, and parallel universe shenanigans, and the whole Ghosts and Torchwood thing. But mostly Daleks.

I think the only place where TGWW is lacking is that IT'S SO ALONE. All the character stuff is brill but THERE IS VERY LITTLE FOLLOW THROUGH. I mean, that's not the fault of the episode itself, which is pretty flawless, but it colours my perception of it and means every time I say "fantastic episode" I also have to add "BUT...".

Tbh though, it's my favourite Amy moment hands down.

The lack of follow through is sad. I mean, it makes sense because young!Amy obviously wouldn't remember anything older!Amy had been though. But I wish we had seen her be angry with the Doctor's actions later and I wish that this had contributed to HER choosing to leave at the end of The God Complex. But we do a bit a bit of follow through from Rory in TGC when he refers to his time with the Doctor in the past tense.

AND YET AMY STILL MANAGED TO KEEP HER HAIR PROPERLY CONDITIONED.

and that is why she is a hero.

Amy's hair truly is an inspiration to us all.

Eh, I thought they were all acting badly for a while. That episode really pissed me off at RTD, actually. Two women fighting over a guy and then bonding over how he's just a silly man - bah. I also hated the specifics of the speech Sarah Jane gives Rose. I think it's how you feel about Moffat in general - all this stuff that could have been good or fine but was just made so sexist and stupid...

Sorry for taking foreeever to reply, but I wanted to take some time to think about my feelings on School Reunion so I could explain why I don't find it problematic ( ... )

I'd agree there was definitely the element of Rose facing what her life would've been (would be?) like sans Doctor. That part worked for me. I actually wish that instead of Rose and the Doctor in wuv twu wuv we'd gotten Rose attempting to deliberately up her skill set while with Ten. I think I might have loved her if after this episode she'd drawn up an educational chart or something. It also would've made that inane tripe in S4 a hell of a lot more believable (and it could've been, but it needed considerably more set-up.

There were other vibes though - not so much in the straightforward cafeteria scenes as in her bitch-fights with Sarah Jane - that did set off vibes of a different sort. Fairly or not, I think comparison to a romantic scene is inevitable for a lot of people when faced with two women who are arguing basically about (1) who's had the cooler time with a man (2) who the man likes more. The Sarah Jane and Rose bonding scene also has strong parallels to the sorts of romantic comedy stories where 2 women (often the ex ( ... )

Oh, God, in "Father's Day" when Pete asks Rose, "Who am I, sweetheart?" and she can BARELY choke out, "You're my daddy," I cry EVERY. TIME. Billie was so fabulous...
