what style of outfit do you prefer? cabaret, American tribal, folkloric, historic? I've done most of my dancing in renn faire type environments so my style is sort of a blend between American tribal and historic Egyptian and Turkish.
Oh, gosh...I have no idea. Like I said, I've never belly danced before and just started watching the DVDs. Where do you tend to shop for pieces for your outfits?
I'm one of those pesky DIYers- between being tall, fat, swaybacked, and 34Js, anything I buy has to be super altered anyway! But if you know what style you like I could look around :)
Honestly, if you want a good costume it's going to cost at least $300, if not more. Even dancers that are standard size have to often move hooks/put in darts/hem/sew for their costumes. I am 5'11" and a size 16 and have trouble finding stuff, so your best bet (if you're a Egyptian style dancer) is a gold or silver bra and belt (I'd recommend a Pharonix Great Loop) and a skirt (maybe with matching arm things). You can find that stuff on bellydancestore.biz or dahlal.com. bhuz.com has a good buy & sell forum as well.
Though really, I'd hold off and see if you can't take classes with some teachers IRL before you start performing and dropping a ton of money on costuming. I don't think I bought any real costuming until I was over 2 years in. For student level haflas and stuff, crop top, yoga pants and a hip scarf (with jewelry and nice make up) is more than sufficient; no one expects you to have professional level costuming at that point. Those sites have plenty of that stuff!
