Outfit ideas for a shindig and a brief-ish Torrid boot review

Hi everybody,

I need shipwreck or tropical island-themed costume/outfit ideas for a party I'm going to on the 1st. It's a cocktail-level party, but we get a choice between showing up in costume or in cocktail-ish attire. I'd prefer to show up in costume, but I have several cocktail dresses to wear if things don't pan out.

Oooh, thanks for linking to those boots! I'm a size 12 in shoes myself, and was absolutely in love with the HT Nana Pole Climbers (the size 11 was big enough to fit me, yay!) until the sides of the heels started splitting open. One of the things I loved most about them was the excellent traction... how's the traction on the Toya boots?

Yeah, the Nana Pole Climbers broke my heart. I'm an unquestionably wide 11, and my foot barely got in them. I would have needed a 12 for the width, but they don't make them in 12s. Blargh.

Anyway, I haven't taken them on their initial outing yet because it's still 90 degrees down here in Louisiana. If you're looking for traction, this is not the boot you're looking for. I feel that Torrid's use of the term "combat boot" was a bit misleading because the sole lacks the traction, thickness, and general bulk of a combat boot.

I'd be more annoyed by it, but I just wanted a pair of boots that would get around my damn legs for once. Not to mention that I didn't even pay full price for them. I got them on the 25% Off Everything sale, plus used my $10 birthday discount, plus my 5% DivaStyle discount. Wound up being about $47 shipped.

Ugh, that sucks. Yeah, traction is a must for me (the city doesn't plow the roads during the winter, let alone the parking lots, so...). Oh well, thanks! And hope they work well for you.

My 2 cents worth about ordering something: I've worked as customer support for online retailers and I can tell you, cheap shipping won't work this close to the date you need it. Forget all those shipping ads about how they run to catch the truck and hand-carry it to your doorstep. It doesn't work that way ( ... )

Yeah, at this late date, I pretty much abandoned the idea of getting anything shipped to me in time.(I submitted this last week) Still looking for ideas and concepts, though.

I've been ordering a lot online lately because I'm in the boonies, and the only stores that have things for me are Cato and Wal-Mart, so I've come to learn a lot of what you've mentioned already. I'm lucky because purchases clear my account very quickly, so processing is almost always under 24 hours for me. I do think you give some very sound advice, though, and I certainly appreciate it.

Well, near is relative. In this case, about a 40-minute drive. Though the hula skirt IS a good idea. I'd have to do a t-shirt, though, since there may be a media presence.

As a fat with medium width feet, I say bring on the size 12's for women without wide feet. I'm sick of ordering all of my shoes online.

I support this, because making more 12s available means they have to make more 11s.

You could also distress an old top and pants/skirt, stick some greenery in your hair, and carry a weathered board. Shipwreck survivor holding onto part of the ship to stay afloat. (Seaweed greenery - think fake aquarium plants)

Ooh, you could be Ginger or Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island! It might require more explanation, but I think it would be nifty!

Ginger's pretty much my front-runner because all I have to buy is a red wig. That and I just want a red wig.
