Health Care for Fats in the US

Mar 22, 2010 08:56

Does anyone know the deal with the new universal health care and those of us who haven't been able to get insurance because of weight and/or other medical issues? I saw some things are going into effect within 6 months the rest of the changes will start in 2014.

I always preface this with "From what I understand...."

In 6 months they will have a "high risk pool" set up that you can buy in to. How it works, who's eligible, how much it'll cost and what it will cover - I have no idea.

But then, theoretically, in 2014 we SHOULD be good and Insurance cos. won't be able to deny us coverage. theoretically.

there are no limits to what they can charge though :(

Well, I thought they couldn't charge more based on your health status, but we'll see how it all pans out.

Actually, the banning on denial of coverage due to pre-existing conditions is effective immediately =)

as the bill was signed into law only tuesday, the temporary program has not yet been created.

From what I have heard/know...they will have to put anyone that doesn't normally qualify in a high risk pool with a higher premium.

i would very much shy away from calling this a universal health care reform bill, it's a health care reform bill.

I hate that we somehow manage to be a rich first world country and NOT have socialized universal health care. Sigh....

The United States does not have universal health care and the bill that was just passed does not afford us that either. The bill is simply a reform on the existing system. Other than that, though, it appears everyone has answered your question :)
