Health Care for Fats in the US

Mar 22, 2010 08:56

Does anyone know the deal with the new universal health care and those of us who haven't been able to get insurance because of weight and/or other medical issues? I saw some things are going into effect within 6 months the rest of the changes will start in 2014.

I always preface this with "From what I understand...."

In 6 months they will have a "high risk pool" set up that you can buy in to. How it works, who's eligible, how much it'll cost and what it will cover - I have no idea.

But then, theoretically, in 2014 we SHOULD be good and Insurance cos. won't be able to deny us coverage. theoretically.

Well, I thought they couldn't charge more based on your health status, but we'll see how it all pans out.

Actually, the banning on denial of coverage due to pre-existing conditions is effective immediately =)

I hadn't read that - I thought it just had to be complete by 2014

They can't kick you out if you develop a condition, starting in 6 months.

They can't refuse to cover you due to preexisting conditions as of 2014. They can't refuse babies because of preexisting conditions in 6 months.

And folks can stay on their parents' insurance up to age 26, as of now.
