I tuned into our local FOX affiliate tonight and caught some outrageous - for lack of a better word - news clips. I wanted to vent, so I turned to you lovely and enlightened people

As it's a FOX affiliate, I have to say...I'm no longer surprised by anything FOX does. This is upsettting, but typical: decapitated fat bodies, with a slowed speed to emphasize jiggling, dressed in oversize tshirts and lycra shorts. Oh, and often holding a burrito.
One of the reasons PBS is about the only channel I watch anymore ;) Oh and TLC for What Not To Wear. Ahem.
maybe the segment was trying to point out differences in quality of life rather than skinny vs. fat. You said the people walking were "not so fat" so I'm assuming there were some people there who could be classified as overweight? It just seems to me like what you described was less about "look how great your life could be if you were skinnier!" and more like "look how great your life would be if you were able to walk around independently

sunlight is awesome for anyone and can help with depression, which, for many people, causes a vicious cycle of self-hate that feeds into their desire to stay indoors.
Heh, I live in New Mexico and today we're having a cold, rainy, cloudy day, and I'm so happy about it I hardly know what to do with myself :)
But I agree that sun rocks. Just not all the time ;)
Oh I completely agree with you. There definitely can be too much of a good thing. But as someone who lives in a more northern climate, where winter eats up most of the year, sunshine really makes life a little more tolerable. If it weren't for sunny days, I wouldn't leave the house at all in the wintertime.
That being said, there is NOTHING more awesome than having a guilt-free day of staying inside when the weather is yucky.
I didn't see that specific segment, but I do feel that it is offensive to have headless and faceless fat bodies with voice overs categorizing the problems with fat and obesity. Also, to use a disabled person in such a way is also offensive. We don't even know the cause of her disability, but when the voice over says something like "more sun, less weight" the typical viewer thinks "fat woman disabled because of fat, fat because not enough sunlight."
FOX has been sued for a number of reasons. I remember that one of the lawsuits (don't know status or what happened) filed against them about 2 or 3 years ago was concerning their treatment of race on their television shows. They were systematically casting people of color, and ONLY people of color, as robbers, rapists, and other negative roles. When asked why, they responded that they cast roles in what is most believable to the viewers. Something to think about.

And I'm from Scotland so I DEFINITELY get what you're saying. Winter that lasts until March is just awful.
