"Bulging Brides"...WTF?!

Jun 21, 2009 17:52

I was spending the afternoon relaxing and watching Fine Living Network on tv after a very stressful work week, when I was accosted by a preview of this Canadian reality show, "Bulging Brides," in which a bride who can't fit into her wedding dress chooses to engage in a weight loss "boot camp" to help her fit into her dress, all caught on camera. I ( Read more... )

The concept of that show is totally disgusting.

That being said... my new sister in law is a size 12. The wedding dress she was measured for and they ordered was a size 16, and it was still too small when she got it. Wedding and bridesmaid dresses run tiny, so I can see where someone would be in the situation where they'd have an uber-expensive dress they have to struggle to fit into. (None of the bridesmaid dresses fit properly either... David's Bridal sucks much ass, yo.)

Even so, televising it and even speaking on it in the fashion of that promo? Absolutely dreadful. All they do is make the self-conscious fears of any woman magnify exponentially with their bullshit. RARGH.

That lady is cracked and the concept disgusting. "Empowering" and "diet dictator" do not really belong together, ya know?

there is a whole passel of that type of "niche" weightloss programming on the canadian channel, Slice. I recommend avoiding anything Tommy Europe is in because it invariable involves fat shaming and mocking and deriding (usually fat women's) bodies.

I freaking hate those Slice weightloss shows. They show totally beautiful normal girls and shame them into fitting a size 6. WTF is wrong with a size 8?

I like X-Weighted because it seems to me that the focus is slightly more on the exercise rather than the need to be skinny.

Disgustingly awful. There's already enough stress in the preparation of a wedding. Why should the dress be stressing you out instead of making you feel fabulous? It makes no sense to me.

Absolutely everything involving the wedding industry is insane. This is disgusting and insane. A wedding should be a joy, not this massive headache of trying to force yourself to conform to the industry's dictates, or having to deal with the ridiculous hassle of trying to find an affordable (for whatever your budget) dress that fits and looks good. And that includes bridesmaids dresses, too. Men's wedding clothing is so much more flexible to different sizes and shapes of men.

I had a two-wedding weekend recently, and the brides were of very different shapes, and they both looked gorgeous. Wedding clothing designers should focus on making dresses that fit and look good on all sorts of brides, rather than wanting the brides to fit the dresses they make.
