hai, i've been the lucky owner of 2 laptops. The first one i bought was an acer, i bought it because i was naively looking just at specs (this is back in 05). i got a 17" widescreen laptop weighing 4-5kg with a pentium 4 processor 3ghz (no centrino or mobile edition). I could make toast on the exhaust fan. It was bloody powerful, but with a battery life of 30 minutes, it wasnt exactly mobile, or fun to carry around ( ... )

Wow thanks, that's really comprehensive! Guess I was lucky for a 'self-confessed technophiliac' to find this post, though I'm curious about how you came across it.

Unless you can't live without it, do NOT get a burner for your laptop. It'll just shorten the laptop's lifespan ( ... )

Oh yeah...basically the more powerful your laptop is (and the more battery life, etc.), the heavier it's going to be. You just need to figure out what you prize more.

I just brought my laptop everywhere with me in a backpack (a sidebag/laptop bag would strain one shoulder too much)

Actually I've found that one shoulder bags are better. I put it on the bony edge of my shoulder so I don't strain my shoulder. And if it gets too much I can just tuck it under my arm to take the weight off. I think that's the most useful thing I've learnt in my 13 years of schooling, that and how to function with no/little sleep.

Hm, for me when one-shoulder bags get too heavy I hug it to my chest.

Back in my home country I used to have a driver that carry my schoolbag for me D:
(I didn't ask, he automatically does it. He also opens and closes car doors for me. The man gets an A++ for currying favors lol X-D)
