hai, i've been the lucky owner of 2 laptops. The first one i bought was an acer, i bought it because i was naively looking just at specs (this is back in 05). i got a 17" widescreen laptop weighing 4-5kg with a pentium 4 processor 3ghz (no centrino or mobile edition). I could make toast on the exhaust fan. It was bloody powerful, but with a battery life of 30 minutes, it wasnt exactly mobile, or fun to carry around.

I recently bought a sony vaio tz. it's 1.3kg in weight, has 5-10 hours battery life, depending on what i'm doing. and is incredibly mobile. it has an inbuilt hsdpa module so i can put in a cellphone sim card and go online in the middle of a field! if i wanted to... It isnt incredibly powerful though, it has onboard graphics, and a 1.06ghz core2duo processor. It runs windows fine (and i run windows with lots of crap open), but as an experiment i tried it running world of warcraft. With all graphic settings turned down, i still only got around 15 frames per second. so that will give you an idea of its graphics grunt! It has mucho connectivity for such a small laptop though. it somehow has fitted in a dvdrw drive, firewire, 3usb, modem, ethernet, bluetooth, etc etc etc.

If you're looking at an apple, it's all good. just dont buy the macbook air!

Wow thanks, that's really comprehensive! Guess I was lucky for a 'self-confessed technophiliac' to find this post, though I'm curious about how you came across it.
