The Perk, Monday Evening

Strange as it may seem, Jake was in fact perfectly aware that there were places in town that were not bars, the Trooper station, or the Arms ( Read more... )

Technically the cold didn't affect Allie. But that didn't mean she couldn't appreciate the warm air of the Perk when she came through the door.

She'd been planning on reading for an hour while she enjoyed the scent of her coffee, but her plans changed when she spotted a newly familiar face.

"Sheriff, this is a surprise."

Jake looked up and grinned at Allie. "Just Jake is fine, really," he informed her, gesturing for her to come and take the empty seat at his table. "Truth be told there's not a lot to police 'round here. The Troopers take care of most of the day-to-day stuff."

"I'll keep that in mind," Allie said as she took the offered seat. "The island is a lot quieter then what I'm used. I like it."

"I think the quiet is compensation for that ten percent or whatever of the time things get really crooked, to be fair," Jake said.

April wasn't really a coffee-in-the-evenings sort of person, but there were carrot muffins here and sometimes a girl just needed a vegetable-flavored pastry well into the evening. And hey, there was that one cool new person she'd met at the dumb speed-dating thing. How about that.

"Irish guy," she greeted Jake, muffin in hand.

"Half-Irish," Jake corrected. "But the accent is all Newfoundland, thank you."

April, being the complete opposite of a world traveler, just arched an eyebrow at that. "Should talk to Irish PR about that," she informed him. "They make it seem like the accent's all theirs."

Also, where the hell was Newfoundland?

"They can keep the Irish accent," Jake said with a shrug. "Mine's better." Not that he was biased or anything.

Once Jaina had class over with and had gotten herself settled (...okay, after a few hours of training) after getting back from her trip, she headed on over to the Perk, because it was going to take some caffeine to stay awake till a normal time.

"I'm not sure I've seen you out in the wild before," she greeted Jake as she waited for her drink.

"Hey now," Jake put on a wounded expression. "A man has to eat, you know." A man typically ordered delivery, actually. But details. "And sometimes I just need a good cup of coffee." And sometimes he ended up with a raspberry mocha, completely unintentionally.

"I can't argue that last part," Jaina said, nodding towards the barista working on her drink. "...Or the first, actually. How've you been?"

"Not bad," Jake shrugged. "Did the three minute dates thing even if the player failed miserably and didn't end up in the duck pond, so... calling it a success."

La la la, look at Stephanie coming in for an extra-strength caffeine kick in the pants for absolutely no reason whatsoever really.

So five-shot mocha with cinnamon and whipped cream it was, and she was on her way out when she noticed Jake. Admittedly it was the red velvet muffin that caught her attention first, and then --

"Oh my god, I think your cup is blooming."

. . . that hadn't been her head voice. Again. Oops.

"...Blooming?" Jake was gonna side-eye you, Steph. SO MUCH SIDE-EYE.

WHAT FOR? SHE WASN'T UP TO ANYTHING SNEAKY AT ALL, REALLY.

Stephanie gestured vaguely with her finger, sort of an upward spiraling motion. "The rim?"

"The- " Jake frowned, glancing down at his paper cup which was not the red kind with a gigantic yellow arrow.

He shrugged. "Huh. Habit, I guess. It's that time of year."
