Devil's Nest [Tuesday, November 8]

Nov 08, 2011 20:42

So...turned out that when Jack turned the clock back, he'd also turned the clock off.

At least he thought he was on time to work?

He also thought it was Monday, so Jack was perhaps not the most reliable narrator.

The Devil's Nest was open. And confused.

All right, this place hadn't been quite what Susan had thought it was before going inside. But it seemed to fit a theme well enough, and she could appreciate that. She supposed she could stay for a little while.

However her scrutiny of the place meant she was also scrutinizing the bartender. Who appeared to be wearing more eyeliner than was strictly necessary.

Jack gave her a friendly wave. "Hello there."

"That's a greeting I never would have thought I would hear in a bar. Aren't you supposed to be gruff and ask what it'll be and listen to my problems?" She'd heard that was what people did.

"Do ye have problems?" Jack asked. "I love a good story."

"No, I just thought certain things should keep to tradition," she said simply. "What do you have that you'll actually serve me?"

"Milk that is blue," Jack replied promptly, "and a variety of sodas that are printed in Swedish."

"One of the sodas, please," said Susan. "Better to chance an unreadable label than milk that's gone off."

"Fizzy and pink or fizzy and blue?" Jack asked after poking through the refrigerator.

"Those both sounds like terrible options," Susan decided. "Surprise me."

Jack frowned and then poured half of each into a glass. "Fizzy and purple!" he declared. "On the house, too, in case it's wretched."

It wasn't his money. He could afford to be generous.

"I'm sure your supervisor appreciates you for everything you just said," she told him, eyeing the glass. Just because it made a pretty color, it didn't mean anything good.

"He encourages creativity," Jack lied cheerfully.

"And free drinks?" she asked with a raised eyebrow.

"On occasion," Jack declared.

"That doesn't sound like good business practice to me." She had no idea what good business practice was, but that certainly wouldn't stop her from talking about it.

"He won't let me drink on the job," Jack complained.

And that was a good business practice. They'd be out of rum in a month.
