The Park, Thursday Afternoon

Mar 04, 2010 15:32

Raven had six very frisky young Dobermen, who, while no longer longing to tear apart anyone they met, were still full of energy. She had found a rescue shelter on the mainland that would take them in, but for now she had somehow secured collars and leashes and was trying to take them for a walk. Rather, they were taking her for a walk.

Leda may or may not be gremlin bit (it's difficult to tell these days). But her hair was dyed jet black, and she dressed as if she were at a funeral. A spooky funeral.

"One of these days I will open my mouth and something poignant will come out. And everyone will gasp 'Oh my God, all along...we never knew...I can't believe a pretty girl like that never got her teeth fixed.' Because out here in the real world it's all about aesthetics. So I just keep my mouth closed."

Poem written by the beautiful and very talented Donna Lynch.

Raven gave Leda an odd look. "Hello, Leda," she said. "Are you all right?"

Leda smiled at Raven, and held her hand out for the dogs to smell.

"In her many years, she has cultivated an unbreakable alliance with the beasts that prowl the wood, with no breach of trust ever coming to light. It is her gift, and it is acknowledged and accepted.

"But when the wolf comes trespassing (and he always has, always will), he has no way of knowing just who he will be reckoning with. To such an interloper she tends to appear rather fragile and diminutive.

"I feel sorry for them...these wolves...that creep in hungrily, their backbones low to the ground, weighted with the heavy burden of cleverness and pompous certainty. Clearly, they do not know that my grandmother and her family have spent many years in the company of far worse creatures than a few wayward hounds."

She was in fact, gremlin bit.

Mun is feeling...whimsical?

Vishuddha sniffed at Leda's hand.

"These are Dobermen, not wolves," Raven said for lack of any other appropriate reaction to Leda's words.

Joan was walking through the park on her way in to town just to enjoy the sunshine.

Her eyes got big when she spotted Raven with all the dogs.

"Did you get some pets?" she teased.

"Ajna, stay," Raven was pleading. "Vishuddha, slow down." Yes, she had named the dogs after chakras. Hush.

At Joan's voice, she smiled at her friend. "I rescued them last night while we were rescuing Dinah," she said. "I could not leave them to be mistreated."

"Rescuing Dinah?" Joan asked, crouching down and petting one of the dogs.

"She was abducted by an enemy of her family," Raven explained. "But she is safe now. These dogs were there to harm her and those who sought to free her, but I was able to make friends with them." Anahata wagged his tail as Joan patted him.

Typically, so far, Angua's passes through the park* had been relatively peaceful. Today was an exception, because it was impossible for a werewolf to be at peace when there were six frisky young Dobermen prancing around. She smelled them before she saw them, of course, and thought about taking a whole new path to avoid them, but figured that might seem a little conspicuous.

"Quite a brood you've got there," she commented to the girl as she came close to passing, watching for signs of lack of control and sending a silent little canine warning to the dogs with her eyes that she wasn't going to take any funny business from any unruly young pups like them, all the while hoping that maybe they'd have better manners than Ankh-Morpork dogs, who would mostly just laugh at a look like that.

"I rescued them last night," Raven said, smiling at the woman. "They are full of energy and did not wish to stay inside all day, but I fear I do not have much experience with handling dogs."

"Well," said Angua in a reasoning tone, "they mostly have to decide that they want to be handled, and after that, they're a cinch."

Not that she spoke from personal experience or anything. She shook her head lightly, going back to the first part the girl had said.

"Rescued them from what?"

Because that? Usually a good beginning toward the handling thing...

Raven frowned. "They were being mistreated and starved so they would be vicious to any intruders," she said. "Someone who wished to harm a friend of mine had them. But I was able to remove their pain."

Ino was on her way to see Jen when she spotted Raven and the puppies.

...

"Cute!" she chirped. "But six of them, Raven? Isn't that bit much for a dorm room?"

"Hello, Ino," Raven said. "They are not all mine! I rescued them from a place they were being mistreated and am only caring for them temporarily."

"Ooooh," she laughed, lifting one shoulder in an easy shrug. "That does make more sense than my first thought. Aren't you tempted to keep one or two of them, though?"

"It is tempting," Raven said, untangling herself from the leashes so she could pat one of the dogs. "But my roommate has a cat, and I do not know how Samuel would feel about a dog in the room."

Ellie decided to take a walk through the park on the way back to the dorms after enjoying something caffeinated at The Perk. She was intent to find a bench and relax for a bit. That was before she noticed Raven and the dogs.

"New pets?" she asked curiously, walking over to get a closer look at them.

"Hello, Ellie," Raven said, waving at her friend when she managed to free one hand from the leashes. "These are dogs I rescued last night. They wished to come outside for a walk."

"Yeah, they do tend to get restless," Ellie said, smiling as she knelt down to pet one of them. "It's good to hear they were rescued if they were in trouble. Are you going to keep all of them?"

"I do not think I can do so," Raven said as Sahasrara was pleased to get attention. "I do not have experience caring for dogs, and my room is far too small for all of them."
