Don't feel bad, I mean there are fans who will string you up for this opinion but there are a lot of people who hate TOS. Me included, and I like the majority of the new series (wasn't really into Voyager but it was not bad, and Enterprise ending up irritating me but even it had some good watchable episodes.)
It's just TNG and DS9 all the way for me, I don't get why I MUST love the original series, while they have similar themes and are in the same universe, not all the series are the same so everyone will have their preferences.
You can't help liking what you like, and TOS is a show from the 60s that is just made of cheese. I love it, but I can understand why it's not everyone's thing.
*shrug* There are plenty of Trekkies who don't like TOS. I love it to bits (and TNG and DS9; dislike VOY and ENT very strongly), but I really don't think there's that many people who will care that you don't like it.
Hold your Trekkie head up proud. You can love what you love and not be ashamed. Just play nice and I'm sure not a single fuck will be given about it. I grew up watching TOS with my grandma and am nostalgic about it, and still find a lot of it very lol worthy, but I never watch it on purpose. Good feelings Trekkie bud!
I like TOS, but I think it's more of a nostalgia thing, since I watched a lot of the episodes as a child. Even so, I'll admit that some episodes can be a bit hard to watch. It had good ideas, but sometimes they don't really come across that well.
But the movies absolutely rocked. I watched the hell out of those as a kid and still re-watch them to this day.
And, really, this doesn't make you a "bad" fan or disqualify you from being a Trekkie, and anyone who says that is silly. There's no one way to like something, and just because your enjoyment of it might differ from the way that other people enjoy it, that doesn't make it wrong. If you like something and enjoy it, you're a fan. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
You know, I felt similarly about TOS when I watched it. I wanted to like it, but a lot of the episodes left me with an overall 'meh' feeling, which totally surprised me because I love the old Doctor Who episodes for that whole cheesy 60s vibe but not TOS. I don't even know. But eh, not liking it in no way invalidates your Trekkie status, and hey, at least you tried watching it.
I don't see how not liking a Trek is any different to having a preference for different Doctors or different eras of comic books etc, even the original of those things isn't exempt from personal taste. I wouldn't give you shit for not liking TOS.
Personally I feel I wouldn't like TOS so much if it wasn't for the fact watching episodes/films was part of how I bonded with my dad when I was little in the late 80s to early 90s. TNG was being shown on BBC2 at some point I think so we watched that together and then the BBC (I think it was them) obviously got wise and started repeating TOS as well. Anyway, I still love it even though it's very much a 60s show but yeah, I admit I might have some nostalgia specs on, which is pretty amazing considering I wasn't even born when it first aired. I suppose I picked up on the nostalgia my dad was getting heh!
See, I'm the opposite; I vaguely knew what Star Trek was but didn't really watch it until I saw the 2009 movie, and then I went and watched (and loved) TOS. Afterward, I tried watching TNG but couldn't get into it.
It's OK to like different things! I adore TOS, but I didn't grow up on TNG or the other series', so I have no idea how I would have reacted had I not discovered TOS separately.
TOS and say, TNG, are just different. If you go in expecting TOS to be something in particular, you're just not going to like it.
You've gotta enjoy the terrible production and farfetched stuff in a lolzy way, along with the often fantastic plots and rather revolutionary themes being bandied about
This. If you watch something like TNG or Voyager, then go into TOS expecting something similar you're in for a world of disappointment. TOS is a cheesy 60s TV show to its core, right down to the silly costumes, outlandish scenarios, and funny episodes.
I enjoy TOS (except for a few episodes where I would like to know precisely what drugs the writers were on - "what is brain," my ass), but I think all of the principal actors grew as actors (in some cases tremendously) between the show and the movies, and it shows. They have a better sense of character and timing in the films.
That's funny, I'm the exact opposite. I love TOS and its cheesiness, but can't stand anything that comes after it. In fact, I was thinking about submitting a secret about it just a few days ago.
Have you watched any of the movies with the ToS cast, OP? I'm not a big fan of the tv series, but the movies feel more...I don't know...'complete'? The acting is better and they seem to be taking the plots/characters more seriously in them. I find them a lot easier to watch than the series.
