The lawn behind the dorms, after the picnic

May 09, 2010 09:07

"Okay, buddy, check out what I got for you." Hiccup emptied his pockets, and then the tablecloth full of food he'd...acquired from the picnic. "Don't know what any of it is, but it's all good stuff."

They were out of the woods. The people he'd talked to hadn't seemed to see any problems with the dragon, and he had been allowed to bring him, so he' ( Read more... )

Cassidy had wandered the picnic for a little bit longer, and after meeting her big sibling and meeting the other Queen, Cassidy was making her way to where she had promised to meet up with Hiccup and his dragon friend.

She approached slowly so as not to spook anyone.

"Hiccup?"

Toothless' head came up quickly, and he stared suspiciously at the newcomer as he moved closer to Hiccup.

"Cassie, hi, you came." He grabbed hold of Toothless' harness and hauled himself to his feet. "That's my roomate," he said to the dragon, whose ears went forward, suspicious look changing to curious. "Cassie, meet Toothless. Toothless, meet Cassie."

"Oh Hiccup, he's beautiful." Cassidy said, her eyes going from the dragon to her new roommate. She was smiling when she looked back at Toothless. "Hello, Toothless. It's very nice to meet you."

And that would be Toothless preening at the compliment, and yes, that would be Hiccup shaking his head and smiling. "You can pat him if you want to," he offered, glancing at Toothless to make sure that was okay.

Given that Tootless was slinking forward like a cat towards Cassidy, head outstretched in obvious invitation, it was probably fine. "He likes being rubbed under the chin."

Ariel had seen the...creature from upstairs; it was kind of hard to miss him when she went to take in the sort of view of the land and the ocean that she'd dreamed about one day taking in. And, even though her first day as a human had been absolutely physically and mentally exhausting, her sense of excitement and adventure was too strong to deny. She went all the way downstairs again, peeking around the corner of the building into the space where the creature was.

She had no idea what in the world it was, and that just made her even more fascinating. Was this some sort of land shark? It looked like it could be! She was just going to watch for a second as she tried to decide if it was safe or not. It seemed to be, if the other people on the lawn weren't too perturbed.

Hiccup didn't notice her, but Toothless did, turning to stare in her direction and taking in deep, sniffing breaths.

"What is it, buddy?" Hiccup asked, looking in the same direction as the dragon. He could just see a face peeking around the corner. "Oh, hi!" He waved. "He won't hurt you, I promise. He's friendly. You can come and meet him if you want to."

Hiccup had hit on a plan: the more people that met Toothless, the better off the dragon would be.

On being spotted, Ariel's first impulse was to pull back behind the building, but the words that followed sounded reassuring. She bit her lip, trying to measure in her head how likely it was that it was all a trap, and decided that she wouldn't ever know unless she went. Besides, it was far too intriguing to refuse.

She peeked back out, gave a nervous smile, and then slowly started to step forward. One of her hands started to move forward, holding it out to the land shark tentatively. She tried to keep her eyes on the creature, but she did glance, as quick as she could, a few times toward the boy who obviously seemed to be the shark's trainer or something like it, to see how he was reacting to it. Did he look eager? Like he couldn't wait for the moment for Ariel to be in the right spot so he could say the word and the shark could bite her in half?

The boy was giving her his most encouraging smile. Toothless stretched out his neck, still sniffing, and tried to snuffle her hand. "It's really okay," Hiccup assured her, keeping one hand on Toothless' shoulder. "His name's Toothless. He's a tame dragon." That got a look from Toothless, but the dragon turned his attention back to the girl.

Lockjaw was having an interesting day.

So far, he'd been to an airport--which was filled with people and things to chew on, but he wasn't allowed to chew on those things because they might contain Medusa's garments and that was a bad Lockjaw. Bad.--and now this island. There were just so many new and wonderful smells too!

Like over there by those people! Perhaps they had something for him to chew on.

Ah, a day in the life of a bulldog the size of a small pony.

Toothless spotted the very large dog and immediately dropped into a crouch, sidling over to put himself between it and Hiccup, head low and eyes narrowed in clear warning.

"Toothless, what are you doing...ohhhh." Hiccup's eyes widended when he saw the-- "Is that a dog? That can't be a dog. It's huge."

Lockjaw barked once happily, trotting over to investigate the cat-lizard thing better. Attilian would be so much more interesting if they had something like that there for him to play with.

Instead of having to wander off to have solo adventures with pets of various heroes...

He stopped a few feet away from the thing, plopping back to stare at it. And bark again.

Toothless let out a low growl, head snaking from side to side, eyes fixed on the dog as his wings began to spread.

"Okay, that's enough." Hiccup held up his hands and moved to stand between the dragon and the giant dog, one hand on Toothless' nose. "No picking fights," he told Toothless, then turned to the dog. "You, you're way too big, but I'm going to assume you don't want to eat me. Right?"

Yes, Hiccup, because the dog will be able to answer you. "So Toothless, you can just stop growling and you," back to the dog, "stop barking. Today is a day for making friends."

Cara's eyes widened when she caught sight of dragon and her hands dropped automatically to her agiels. Which weren't there, curse it.

No matter she could stop it eating that kid with Richard's stupid haircut with her bare hands if she had to.

Bad Cara, no killy!

Toothless' head shot up, barely missing Hiccup's, and he stared at the new arrival. "Hey, watch it, buddy! I only have one of those," Hiccup told him, then turned to see what he was staring at. "Uh, hi!" he called and waved a little wave.

Apparently the kid didn't just have Richard's stupid hair, but his lack of survival sense too. "Get back before it eats you."

She was Doing Good, the others would be so very proud.

Hiccup and Toothless exchanged a look. "No, no he won't eat me. He's--" Toothless chose that moment to snap out his teeth and pretend to gnaw on Hiccup's head. "Oh, very funny. Yes, that's great. Thank you so much, you useless reptile."

Emmett hadn't chickened out of this, but he had decided that putting his shirt back on after the picnic could be a thing. Call it psychological armor if you like, even if a cashmere sweater would do absolutely jack to stop him from being eaten or burned to a crisp if he turned out to be the one exception to Puff the Magic Dragon's policy on friendliness.

Despite the description, he was still relieved when he finally came in sight of Hiccup and Toothless. "You weren't kidding about pony-sized." That face was a lot less ... mini-Godzilla-y than he'd been picturing, too.

Hiccup looked up at Emmett and grinned, while Toothless looked at him with interest, ears flicking forward.

"Emmett, this is Toothless. Toothless, this is Emmett. Be nice. He's my assigned big sibling, which, actually, I have no idea what that means," he added, while Toothless stretched his neck out in Emmett's general direction. "But no jumping on him."

"It means I'm supposed to make sure you know your way around the school, tell you that story the girls pass around mandatory shirtlessness is a lie but don't let that stop you, and not let you anywhere near Locker 327," Emmett explained. Sort of. While staring up at the dragon who kind of looked like a giant cat with scales. "Hi, Toothless. He's right; no jumping on me; I break easy."

"Oh, hey, that makes sense," Hiccup said, puzzling over the shirtlessness issue while Toothless took a step closer, leaning forward to try and sniff Emmett. "I think I'll keep my shirt on, if taking it off's not required. Wouldn't want to overwhelm people with my mighty Vikingness," he said with a grin.

...because skinny Vikings were so entirely overwhelming.
