The lawn behind the dorms, after the picnic

"Okay, buddy, check out what I got for you." Hiccup emptied his pockets, and then the tablecloth full of food he'd...acquired from the picnic. "Don't know what any of it is, but it's all good stuff."

They were out of the woods. The people he'd talked to hadn't seemed to see any problems with the dragon, and he had been allowed to bring him, so he' ( Read more... )

Cassidy had wandered the picnic for a little bit longer, and after meeting her big sibling and meeting the other Queen, Cassidy was making her way to where she had promised to meet up with Hiccup and his dragon friend.

She approached slowly so as not to spook anyone.

"Hiccup?"

Toothless' head came up quickly, and he stared suspiciously at the newcomer as he moved closer to Hiccup.

"Cassie, hi, you came." He grabbed hold of Toothless' harness and hauled himself to his feet. "That's my roomate," he said to the dragon, whose ears went forward, suspicious look changing to curious. "Cassie, meet Toothless. Toothless, meet Cassie."

"Oh Hiccup, he's beautiful." Cassidy said, her eyes going from the dragon to her new roommate. She was smiling when she looked back at Toothless. "Hello, Toothless. It's very nice to meet you."

And that would be Toothless preening at the compliment, and yes, that would be Hiccup shaking his head and smiling. "You can pat him if you want to," he offered, glancing at Toothless to make sure that was okay.

Given that Tootless was slinking forward like a cat towards Cassidy, head outstretched in obvious invitation, it was probably fine. "He likes being rubbed under the chin."

There was a good chance that Cassidy just might end up spoiling Toothless. She was smiling happily as she patted him and then rubbed him beneath his chin as Hiccup had suggested.

"He's great, Hiccup." She said and then she looked at Toothless. "You're beautiful and friendly."

He was and he knew it. Toothless flopped onto his side, eyes half-closed, making what sounded an awful lot like a purr. Like all dragons, he had a fatal weakness; in his case, it was being rubbed under the chin.

Hiccup came over, standing next to Cassidy, watching his dragon in amusement, pleased the first introduction in Fandom was going so well. "He's my best friend," he said simply. "I'm glad you like him."

She rubbed Toothless some more and then smiled at Hiccup. "I'm glad you're going to be my roommate, Hiccup. And thank you for introducing me to your best friend. Friends are important."

Maybe this whole place wasn't going to be so scary for her after all.

"They are." Toothless blinked once, then rolled back to his feet, careful not to knock into Cassidy, and frisked around them before heading back to shove his nose in the pile of food. Hiccup watched him, pleased and amused, then turned to face Cassidy. "So, is your home anything like this?"

Cassidy was watching Toothless move around with a grin and then she turned to answer Hiccup. "Oh, no. I've never seen anything like this place. My home is nice with the woods and the gardens and the streams, but I've never even seen a building as large as this school." She gave him a shy smile. "I've never been around so many people, either."

Hiccup nodded in understanding because, hoo boy, did he ever understand. "Maybe that's why they matched us up," he guessed. "Berk's only got about two hundred people in it and I know everyone." Toothless huffed, sounding offended. "Oh, and yeah, it's got dragons, too. But hey, I know them as well." He shrugged. "So we can figure out this whole big-building, lots-of-people, not-really-sure-what's going-on thing together."

She grinned. "My home village is called Bhak, and it's relatively small as well. I know everyone that lives there, too." She nodded. "I'm thinking that they matched us up exactly for that reason and knew we would need someone else who would understand what we were going through."

"Our homes even sound the same. Bhak, Berk." He was pretty pleased at having a reason he could tell Astrid, and also pleased that he had a roommate who would understand how weird this was. The whole being a girl thing could be dealt with. "Obviously it was meant to be," he decided. "So, did your-- parents?" he guessed, "send you here for a specific reason, or was it more just 'off to school and we'll see you in the fall'?"

Oh, there was no way that she could tell her new friend the real reason her mother had been so adamant that she come to this school.

"My mother thought that I needed some new experiences outside of our home territory. She heard about this school and thought it would be good for me." She smiled. "She thinks I'm too shy."

"Pfft, shy." He gave a dismissive wave. "You've met a dragon, a Viking and a picnic with way too many people, all in one day! Doesn't sound shy to me." He paused. "Either that or the school's working really fast."

She grinned at him. "This is a lot different than anything I've ever done before. But, you're right in that I met a dragon that is such a sweetheart. I met a Viking who is my roommate and a new friend."

Toothless looked unbelievably pleased at the compliment. "Oh, he's just going to be impossible to live with now," Hiccup said, rolling his eyes, but he was smiling while he said it.
