Rumor Gal Campfire, Friday Afternoon

Jul 24, 2009 17:09

Shortly after Rangering class, Arthur had made it back to his cabin with some of yesterday's catch firmly in hand. Now, he was outside, by the campfire, one skewer of freshly cleaned rabbit-flesh already in place over the open fire while he busied himself with his knife, getting ready to tackle the second rabbit ( Read more... )

Dinah was out after her morning run, and had been thinking of heading into town to find lunch, but the sight of whatever Arthur was skewering had her wandering over to blink at him.

"Eurrrgh."

Not eloquent, but still expresive.

"Dinah," Arthur greeted, blatantly ignoring that particular greeting as he poked at the skewer.

"Is there even enough meat on that to eat?" Dinah asked, fascinated in spite of herself. "Once you get the fur off and the... um, gut out?" Then, "Hi, Arthur."

"Actually, the rabbits here are quite plump," he returned, glancing up, "Like they're trying to make up for the lack of decent game. It's not venison or anything, but it's edible."

"Omigod ewwwwwwww what is that?!" Claudia shrieked shrieked, wrinkling up her nose.

Arthur winced. "It's a rabbit," he said, flatly. What was she, part bird or something?

"Omigod you're eating a BUNNY?! What is wrong with you?!"

Yes. Definitely part bird. "I was hungry," he said, going for blase and winding up with mildly irritated.

"Well that reminds me of home," Riggins commented as he was walking by the campfire. What? He was from Texas. "Did you catch that yourself?"

"Of course. Yesterday," Arthur answered, promptly, "So it's not entirely fresh, but it's edible."

"Didn't really expect anyone around here to hunt for their food," Riggins said. "But I assume you're in it for the hunting part, not the needing food part."

"The hunting's good fun," he agreed, checking on the meat over the fire. "The eating's just a pleasurable result."

It wasn't everyday that you saw someone actually cooking like that here. Ino contemplated that.

"Rabbit?" she asked lightly. "Rather wee for one of the teal deer, after all."

And Ino was pretty sure the island was low on other things it could be.

...unless he was roasting a student. Ino was just going to go with: no, no he was not.

"I don't shoot the blue deer," Arthur offered, without actually bothering to look up at her. "You never know what kind of curses may come from such prey."

"...curses from animals?" Ino asked, taking a seat with a notebook and pen. "And they're teal, not blue, get it right, oh fearless leader."

"Looks blue to me." Arthur's tone of voice implied that that was the end of the argument. "There are some mystical animals you shouldn't kill, lest curses be called down." Not that he had any experience with that. "So it's better to be safe than cursed."

After class, Eric was wandering back to the campground when the aroma of roasting meet wafted to his nose.

"Rabbit?" he asked, as he approached. "I haven't had rabbit in ages."

Oh, look, it was someone even further down on his list of people that he wanted to talk to than Francine.

"That's a pity," he said, idly, and stuck to his work.

Maybe Eric would just wander off on his own. Just this once, universe?

Certainly, Eric noticed that Arthur seemed... hesitant... about speaking to him.

Certainly, Eric didn't care. He flopped down onto a convenient log and watched the rabbit roasting over the fire. "Mind, I've never had it quite like this," he said. "French cuisine isn't much for roasting over open fires."

"Then perhaps you should-- find a French cook," Arthur said. Idly.

Subtle, Arthur.

You know, like a brick.
