Rumor Gal Campfire, Friday Afternoon

Jul 24, 2009 17:09

Shortly after Rangering class, Arthur had made it back to his cabin with some of yesterday's catch firmly in hand. Now, he was outside, by the campfire, one skewer of freshly cleaned rabbit-flesh already in place over the open fire while he busied himself with his knife, getting ready to tackle the second rabbit ( Read more... )

Dinah was out after her morning run, and had been thinking of heading into town to find lunch, but the sight of whatever Arthur was skewering had her wandering over to blink at him.

"Eurrrgh."

Not eloquent, but still expresive.

"Dinah," Arthur greeted, blatantly ignoring that particular greeting as he poked at the skewer.

"Is there even enough meat on that to eat?" Dinah asked, fascinated in spite of herself. "Once you get the fur off and the... um, gut out?" Then, "Hi, Arthur."

"Actually, the rabbits here are quite plump," he returned, glancing up, "Like they're trying to make up for the lack of decent game. It's not venison or anything, but it's edible."

Dinah sat down, grossed out but still interested, and shook her head as she watched him clean the carcass. "Rabbits are pets. And pests. Food, yargh. Oh, did you take Brynne with you to hunt? Or would she have eaten everything she found still?"

"S-- He's too young yet," Arthur said, matter-of-factly, and made swift work of the rabbit's fur. "Once he's advanced in his training." He stripped it. "You should try some."

"You think I won't?" Dinah said, trying to decide if she even wanted to. She'd eaten gagggh, and that was much grosser, but this was a baby bunny. Then again, it was already dead. And-- "Okay, just a little piece. A really well-cooked piece."

Then she could say she ate it and hated it, ha.

Arthur wordlessly offered her the skewer. Well, and... "Take one of those plates of plastics," he ordered.

Dinah looked around and saw the plates nearby, and picked one up to hold out to him, watching warily. "Do you guys have rabbit for dinner a lot, in Camelot? Or is usually, uh, venison?" She couldn't help asking, "Did you try Worf's Klingon food at the Culture Fair?"

"Or pork, or veal..." he said, making a gesture that implied that he ate rather a lot of different really dead animals back home. "No, I don't believe I did." He shoved two chunks of rabbit meat onto her plate with the edge of his knife.

Dinah stared at them a moment, bracing herself. Not a bunny. Just meat. C'mooon.

"I ate a space worm, I can eat this," Dinah muttered, and popped one piece into her mouth.

It was actually not bad. At all. Great. She was eating meta for Thumper. Her expression was probably hilarious.

Oh, it was.

So hilarious it was giving Arthur a (much needed) laugh. "It's not going to jump up and strangle you," he said.

"I know!" Dinah protested, then took a second bite, totally without thinking about it. "It's just weird. Something little and cute as food." She frowned, thinking about sanitary issues for the first time. Oh well. "We should feed you sushi."

"I'm not eating raw fish," Arthur told her, immediately, "So forget about that."

He snagged a plate and dumped some meat on it for himself.

Dinah gave him a grin. "Do you like any of our modern food?" Another bite. "This would go good with barbecue sauce."

"Some of it's decent," he had to allow for, snagging some meat with the blunt end of his knife to eat. "Merlin's taken to cheeseburgers."

Don't talk about Merlin, Arthur, it just leads to wanting to smack yourself.
