Apr 30, 2011 02:29

The ceremony was once again held at sunset for the benefit of the graduates’ less diurnal guests, but the lawn was well-lit with twinkling blue and gold lights draped across bleachers, stage, surrounding trees and specially-assembled trellises, giving the overall effect of a peaceful fairy grove. Dolf wasn't usually a big fan of Queen's Day, beyond the mandatory prowling-the-Queen's-Day-flea-markets that every boy his age had to go through. But having been stuck here for a ong time now, it felt more important, somehow.

Which would explain the hat he had strapped to his back when he sat down in the audience that evening.

Shhh.

"...Do I want to know?" Cally asked when she'd spotted him in the stands and made her way over with a couple of programmes in hand.

"It's Koninginnedag," Dolf said, cheerfully. "Queen's Day. I have to wear orange."

That wasn't a law.

"It...doesn't clash with the school colours too badly?" Cally offered.

Yes. Yes, it did.

"It's supposed to clash and stand out," Dolf replied, grinning at her. "Orange is our colour. I don't think it can not clash."

She'd already lied and said it didn't clash, so she couldn't .... fine, fine, she could. "Good, because I was lying. It clashes rather spectacularly."

Susie still felt a kind of disbelief that she was watching this happen, that Calvin had actually managed to graduate high school, even one as odd as this seemed to be.

She occasionally cast a glance beside her. That Calvin had insisted on Hobbes getting his own seat...that she could believe.

Sure enough, perched on the seat next to Susie was a battered plush tiger.

There was no chance that Faramir would miss this occasion. He'd changed his usual ranger drab for a rather more fanciful outfit, bearing the White Tree on his chest.

He found himself a seat upfront so he would not have to miss a moment of the ceremony.

Ender was there, of course, entering the audience early so he'd have a decent seat. He wasn't particularly plagued by big emotions about the whole ceremony, unlike, he suspected, most of the crowd.

"Can I hide here with you?" Ben asked, sitting down next to Ender without waiting for a reply.

Ender barely spared him a glance, instead choosing to look past him at the large, Skywalker-shaped disaster taking form up ahead.

"If I had a cloak, I'd lend you it."

"If you had a cloak, you'd probably have taken it from my closet anyway, so I don't think that would help me much," Ben said, sliding down in his chair.

Ender shot him an amused look. "If I had a cloak, that would mean I'd have had the forsight to bring it while you clearly haven't," he said, "But sadly, neither of us quite planned for this one."

"Just when I thought my family couldn't get weirder," Ben moaned.

Because they'd obviously done this to make his life difficult.
