The evil, usurping uncle (it's always the uncle) believes that his dead brother's wife wasn't royal enough for the new king to rule, or he has some reason to believe she might have been unfaithful and the kid isn't even related to him.

Oh yes. And also, he (and his supporters) may think the kid (or the kid's appointed regent if it's not the uncle himself) is allied to the wrong kind of interests that may lead the country to ruin.

Of course, the kingdom in question may not even be an automatically hereditary monarchy. Sweden wasn't officially so until Gustav I Vasa's reign in the 16th century - before that, kings (and the one queen) had to be elected by the big landowners, though a firstborn, legitimate son of the former king often had a leg up.

I'd love to hear more of what you thought about with your three-way marriages!Really? Okay, but be warned it's a bit long, way geeky and may not make all that sense. Um, it was interwoven with the idea of people, or at least men, belonging to different moieties. In puberty all men in that ( ... )

(SA: Now I kinda feel embarrassed this tl; dr post of private would-be world-building will remain visible due to being the first in the thread... I should have made a few empty comments first, I guess.)

I would *love* to see more books that took into account that not all monarchies have to work the same way. Elected kings; kings choosing their successor from their sons or a whole pool of royal relations; eldest children inheriting regardless of gender. Actually, I'd like to see more princesses in line for the throne in general for any reason, because then it'd be more likely that someone would do it well.

Your society sounds interesting! Did you have a plot idea, or did you just do some intricate worldbuilding? Because I have this tendency to come up with detailed background stuff and then realize that I've got absolutely nothing to do with it. It's a problem.

How doesn't it run out of bandwidth if it stores the pics?

You know what I mean, it's for free, there is no publicity (that I know of) and you upload the pics directly to tumblr. How do they pay for the bandwidth?

Well, they use quantserve, that helps mine data they can sell. Most likely they started by getting capital first and will later introduce adds or fees after they build a loyal fan base.

Exchanges - it's happening again anonymous October 24 2010, 20:01:27 UTC
I don't know what to do! It's like I'm hit with the bad luck stick. The last fic exchange/remix/challenge I signed up for I got a writer who is much much better than I am. I just got assignments for two more things I signed up for and the same thing happened. What is it with mods assigning me writers who are obviously much much better than I am? Normally people get assigned partly by ability level but that's not happening here. I know it's stupid to think it's a conspiracy by the mods when it's different fandoms and they (afaik) don't know each other.

Do your best and try not to think too hard about the other writers.

And don't ask for advice on anon memes.

NA And don't ask for advice on anon memes.

Is there something I'm missing with this sentence?

X-Files help? anonymous October 24 2010, 20:56:48 UTC
I'm on the third season - watching the series for the very first time - and I can't stand the UST anymore. I see two het ships, two slash ships and a possible threesome. I NEED to read some fics but want to stay unspoiled for future events (heh, managed to stay completely unspoiled for 15+ years, this might be a record). Are there any Mulder/Scully, Scully/Skinner, or Mulder/Scully/Skinner fanfiction archives that tag or sort the stories by season? Help me, nonnies, this fandom is so old and so huge I don't even know where to start.

Also, to make this slightly more relevant, was there any good wank in this fandom or was it pre-wank?

(JFC, I had to reload captcha ten times before I got an image that was readable)

ooh X-Files... haven't watched that show in years! Never got around to reading fic for it though so I can't help you there. I too am curious about what wanks went on in that fandom back in the day...

Not in the fandom, but I know they had a big shipper vs. noromo (ie, non-shipping) war.

LMAO, resisting the urge to spoil the whole series for you right now.

Generally XF fanfic was good with warning for spoilers, the authors used to clarify which episodes were spoiled.

Here
http://krycek.gossamer.org/

There is a spoiler tag and it lists the fanfic by the episodes it spoils.
