Exchanges - it's happening again anonymous October 24 2010, 20:01:27 UTC
I don't know what to do! It's like I'm hit with the bad luck stick. The last fic exchange/remix/challenge I signed up for I got a writer who is much much better than I am. I just got assignments for two more things I signed up for and the same thing happened. What is it with mods assigning me writers who are obviously much much better than I am? Normally people get assigned partly by ability level but that's not happening here. I know it's stupid to think it's a conspiracy by the mods when it's different fandoms and they (afaik) don't know each other.

Do your best and try not to think too hard about the other writers.

And don't ask for advice on anon memes.

NA And don't ask for advice on anon memes.

Is there something I'm missing with this sentence?

Yes; it's called 'irony'.

I ran a fest for a number of years and I can tell you I never took ability level into account. The fest I ran was quite large and in any given year I had no idea who most of the people who signed up for it were and I certainly didn't know their level of writing ability. Mods generally make assignments based solely on the information you put into your sign up, which is why it's so important to be as complete as possible about what you will and won't do. Mods are way the hell too busy to research every recipient's writing abilities and add that factor into the equation when making assignments. It's definitely stupid to jump to a conspiracy theory as explanation.

If you're that uncertain of your writing ability that this is going to be a big deal for you, maybe the best thing to do is not sign up for any more exchanges.

I can understand that and I know for big exchanges it's true. However, these mods have said - during the time the exchanges were being thought up - that writing ability would be taken into account when assignments were made up. In the past (I've written for these exchanges in the past) I've never had it happen where my ability and the ability of the person I got were wildly different so I'm confused by why these last few exchanges had done that. Maybe your writing has gotten better, insecure anon. Or maybe the mods know that the ~*amazing*~ writers secretly love your favorite badfic pr0n plot that you write over and over. Just write something that sucks as little as possible and quit worrying about it.

When I ran an exchange, I took ability into account where I could, but honestly, couldn't do it in every case. (and of course, judgements differ)

If you're really feeling worried about this, ask the really good writer's beta for beta help and swear them to secrecy.

I bet you're pretty good, though. Do your best to fit the prompt and don't worry too much.

As an exchange mod, you get assigned requests that match your preferences. Writing ability has not once entered my considerations when matching up participants. It's too bloody complicated already if you look at preferences only. What do you think exchange mods are - Vulkans?

What fandoms (or if that's too specific and small, what types of fandom) are you in? Because none of the exchanges I've ever taken part in have ever taken ability into consideration. I wish they did... I've gotten so much shit fic in exchanges. (For the record, I'm in medium-sized anime fandoms.)
