I hate learning that I haven't been as on top of things as I thought I had. But in learning that I wasn't on top of things before, I become on top of things.
Remember learning a new song or practicing piano? At least for me, no matter how hard I practice, when I go into a lesson, the teacher always points out something I completely missed and wasn't doing. So then I practice that the next week, and at the following lesson, there's something else.
It's about overall improvement. As long as you're getting a positive slope overall, even if it looks jagged close up, you're doing well.
In other words, as long as your trendline looks like this picture and not this picture, in the scope of human being-ness, you're doing all right.
At least, that's my perspective. I stop and think, "Am I doing this better than I was last year, even though I'm not doing so well?" If the answer is yes, then I am awesome, but I still have stuff to work on. If it's not, then I didn't get it, and I have tedious, repetitive stuff to work on.
Wow... rereading what I wrote, it's much more deep than I initially thought it was. I agree about the trendlines. It's calculus! Finding the slope of improvement! As long as it's a positive number, no matter how small or how low the starting point is, I'm doing ok.
